A lot of people owe their lives to Westland in this country, and of course Sikorsky around the world...

We are phasing in Merlins now, and I hope they will paint some of them yellow like the Sea King as grey or green is just wrong for a rescue chopper...

sure thing, and I still can't get over the fact that, that" little Birdie" needs 100+ hours of maintenance :/ i would think planes such as the Pave Low, B-2 Spirit, Ac-130 and other big planes needed more maintenance ??

Canada's Sea Kings are over 50 years old, and still flying nicely. I have friends who both fly and maintain them.

OK. what will they turn out to be? i see where Sikorsky is taking many ex-USN Sea Kings out of "mothballs" and back to their Stratford,CT facility for total rebuild/refurbishment and subsequent resale to foreign customers! good,ol King!{never should have stopped making them!}

Well the producers are Eurocopter, Westland, Sikorsky, Augusta and some others for now.

Ye the good new would have bin a upgraded sea king !
composite blades, new interior, MRH Deicing, 1 extra generator, full glass cockpit, (fully new avionic system) and so on..

TomCatDriver In reply to SindreAHN [2011-08-08 10:05:24 +0000 UTC]

i,d go with Sikorsky or Westland...totally refurbished Sea Kings?...it would certainly save some defence-budget money. that,and your service does have a good base of experienced personnell qualified on the type.

No we shouldn't have and its successor should of retained the boat hull to allow for water landings. Long live the Sea Kings, no matter whose flag you fly under!

TomCatDriver In reply to Goughan86 [2011-08-07 19:55:31 +0000 UTC]

foolish of them....just because something,s a bit older,doesn,t mean it,s no good anymore.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Goughan86 In reply to TomCatDriver [2011-08-08 03:11:39 +0000 UTC]

Not to mention they replaced it with a less capable helo that couldn't go as far or carry as many people. The fact that they axed the boat hull is just asinine. Its a NAVAL helo, a capability like that it is VERY useful, especially for CSAR and Spec Ops missions as well as USCG missions. Don't know what the Navy was thinking... An updated and modern Sea King would have been a far better choice than the Sea Hawk but oh well. The old H-3 will always be my favorite and the fact that they're still flying is a great testament to a helo that first took to the air in 1955!
