Description Alright, before anyone gets their knickers in a knot:

I used Garry's Mod for the ships, touched them up to be less... N64 looking, and pretty much went nuts from there. Just making sure the record is clear.

I'm sure for many this is nothing new, but for those who don't know, before I took on F-Zero: Seppuku, there existed a significant debate over whether I wanted to do a Zelda, Mario, Star Wars, Star Fox, or F-Zero story. I chose the very latter, of course, and that led to the 1.6 million word saga we know and love today. However, despite its success and my love for what came out of it, I do still nowadays daydream about owning and commanding a Star Fox fan fiction. The fact is: Just because I made an F-Zero story doesn't mean I have to shy away from Star Fox. And you know what? Despite my claim to have retired from fan fiction writing, I might still consider it. EngelReise and Shrouded Piety must be completed before I move onto any such project, also, I'm not saying I'll do it, what I am saying, however, is that the possibility of a Star Fox: Seppuku (not literally the name) is realistically on the table. I feel that if I were to take on a Star Fox fiction, I could easily rise up to the top as I did Seppuku, however, I think I'd keep it around 200-300k words this time. I do truly believe, regardless of what decision I make, that EngelReise and Shrouded Piety will be my final stories to ever surpass a million words of content.

But just so we're clear: A Star Fox: Seppuku is on the table, not confirmed. There's actually a ton of potential post-ER/SP story ideas I've already come up with, however, I would say that the idea of a Star Fox: Seppuku is the most likely candidate at the moment alongside the possibility of a modern remake of Universe of Fire.

And that's where the question comes in:

"Siontix, what would a Star Fox: Seppuku be about?"

First of all, let me be clearer when I say that the story wouldn't literally be called Star Fox: Seppuku, it'd be something else; I'm only calling it Star Fox: Seppuku as a placeholder.

What I would want to do with such a story is exactly what I did with F-Zero: Seppuku: Ignore the strict lore for maximum freedom to the author. To clarify, that means, I would 100% ignore the "That's a contradiction with canon lore!" critics and just rewrite the Star Fox lore as I see fit. F-Zero: GP Legend did this and thus F-Zero: Seppuku did so as well, I would prefer to do this with a theoretical Star Fox story just as I did with Seppuku. This basically implies that I'd pick and choose what parts of the canon Star Fox plot I'd want to keep in the story, that way, I could flesh out planets, civilizations, backstories, etc. without restrictions. This is especially big to me when we deal with stuff like comics. All of this would likely agitate the hardcore Star Fox fan, to whom I say: "There's many, many, many more Star Fox stories out there," all of which would probably be more 'faithful,' as it were, than what I would write.

That all said, what might the story be about? Keep in mind, this is a complete hypothetical, especially being that I would start such a story around the year 2020 or so. (It is imperative that EngelReise and Shrouded Piety are completed first.)

My earliest fetch for a Star Fox story would be exactly what I wanted to do in 2012, when debating on what story to write. That is, I'd like to do a story that focuses on Star Wolf in a timeline that covers:

  • Pre-64
  • Star Fox 64
  • Star Fox Adventures
  • Star Fox Assault

Pretty simple idea and it has surely been done many, many times by now. That being said, every author has something unique to bring to the table, and believe me, I'd offer countless aspects and angles that'd have Star Fox fans demanding more.

As I said, I believe this would last for about 200-300k words, a four-part saga (or maybe five..?), respectively.

That's really all I can say. If it sounds like a pretty flat plot, well, that's because there is no plot. Again, I am merely pitching this as a possible successor to ER/SP that may simple get ran over by a greater or equal Universe of Fire ambition. Still, I think a lot of my peers would love to see me come out of fan fiction retirement for one final shot at Star Fox. If nothing else, it'd probably help bring in new friends and boost publicity of my works.

I'll keep it in mind, for sure, but I won't need to make a final decision for years, thankfully.

Lastly, what's this drawing of? To be honest, probably not even related to anything I just said. It's an ambiguous drawing of a Star Fox member getting chewed out by a Star Wolf member, random planet, random situation, presumably a surprise attack of some sort. I suspect this is a situation where said Star Fox member was alone in this canyon, then all of a sudden, intercepted by someone in Wolf's team. What follows is a desperate bid to escape which, by the looks of it, isn't going well. Does someone drop by to save the Arwing? Does the Arwing crash and leave the Star Fox member stranded? Do they manage a comeback that sends the Wolfen shying away? Do they both crash into a mountain and need to set aside their differences to survive? That's kind of the nice thing about a drawing like this, especially when it's not drawn to a story or game moment--it really could be anything. Who knows why this is happening, how it happened, or what will happen.

Just like F-Zero I know only Super Smash Bros. Star Fox, so if you made a story I would get my first exposure from that.

I'll tell you this guy looks like he's about out of stunts to pull.

I definitely think this would be in a ambush situation. Probably someone was investigating some section of the planet, when Leon came out of nowhere and is hunting them down. I know one thing for sure...if the pilot is anyone but Fox, they would be sure to sit there and take it (especially in Assault...mindless and useless AI).

In Star Fox 64 their only use, really, is distracting the other Wolfens. Last night in my fight against the Wolfen II's, I killed everyone but Wolf and even though Peppy and Slippy were still alive, they did absolutely nothing to help. Ended up dying.

And this is worsened in Assault. Most notably, in Mission 3. When Krystal asks for help, each time I come to save her, she's likely on her last legs. She barrel rolls without purpose and then shoots 3 little lasers into space. Falco does the same, but my gosh...I mean, is Star Fox fighting Star Wolf, or is Fox fighting Star Wolf? Heck, they're hardly different from green (Non-player ally) units in Fire Emblem games.

I mean, can you imagine trying to keep them safe in Mission 7? Nah. Best go in for the kill fast so that you don't have to deal with the radar jamming madness.

Which brings me to another issue:

The only team member you really need to keep alive is Slippy, as he is the only one who contributes anything (boss data analysis.) So, when you're playing the radar jammer mission on the hardest difficulty like I was, there was absolutely zero incentive for me to try and save Krystal. Nothing. Saving her is hard, pointless, and honestly kind of embarrassing. Like, if Falco is the elite pilot of the team as the lore claims, why is it that he constantly needs to be rescued even when you're on foot? The on foot stuff really pisses me off in that regard, too, because firstly, the Field of View is bad in Assault, you know, where at a certain distance flying ships just disappear. So, in that sense, you probably have to wait until the pilot in trouble flies closer to you so that the 3D models reappear. Secondly, whether you can save them at all or not heavily relies on whether you have a rocket launcher or landmaster, and even if you have either thing, it's still hard rescuing them either because of the former issue or the fact that there seems to always be map objects in the way of your shots.

That said, over the years, I've also noticed that your teammates do nearly -75% less damage than you do. Whereas you can kill regular enemies in one or two shots, it can take your teammates almost ten to kill even the most basic of enemies.

I needn't say much about the whole gimmick where Slippy/Crystal are on the ground helping you. It's what it is: A gimmick or dare I even say, an illusion to make you feel like you're being helped on foot. Like I said in this deviation, it would probably give fan fiction writers ideas in the sense that in a written work you could switch between Fox/Slippy scenes while infiltrating Wolf's space station, but in the game itself, Slippy is quite literally useless. Am I surprised for a game that old? Not really, I'm sure a Star Fox Assault remake would do a better job at it. If I were them, I'd have just made it so Slippy/Krystal follow you to the best of their ability to assist in combat. There's a simple enough idea. Might've even been a cool idea if when on foot you could order Krystal/Slippy to move to a certain position. If they take too much damage as they would in an Arwing, I'd say, do something where they have to teleport back to Great Fox. In the actual game, they're invincible on foot. However, now that I think of it, I'd like to try and see if it's possible to push Krystal off the edge in the Homeworld mission.

Now that is actually crazy...being invincible on foot, but being completely vulnerable in the Arwing. See how backwards that is? That game is old, yes. But that is a massive design flaw. I wager it would have done better if it was given time for more adjustments or testing before final release. But still, imagine how our wars would play out (fictional and otherwise) if foot soldiers suffered no damage, whole those in vehicles were hurt.
