Description As promised, here is the illustration I made for my Illustration Workshop class. This was our first project, meant to be used as a postcard for self-promotion. We had to select from two themes; restaurant and treasure hunting. I chose the latter and did an illustration depicting the lovely story by Edgar Allen Poe, The Golden Bug (yes, it happens to be a treasure hunting story.)
If you would like to learn more about this story and treasure hunting in general, you can get a pretty nice summary here.

And, a link to my class blog - [link]

There is also a back and some type on the final versions of the postcard. Another project to be posted soon!

One quirk in the story - the careful decoding of the instructions to find the treasure would have worked properly IF the message was written in French. Each language has a signature letter frequency. (words starting with C are fabulously rare in German, and the few that doΒ are of foreign origin). The letter frequency of the message was of French.

The editor asked Poe to redo the passage as readers would not be familiar enough with French to understand the logic. Poe did not alter the details, tho.

Fantastic, this's a great story. I've been everywhere looking for good illustrations of it, especially including the skull in the tree. Well done!

Thank you very much! It means a lot to have someone so interested in the story behind it as well.
