Watercolor

At the Perpich Center for Arts Education, all the Visual Arts Juniors are given an assignment to complete during the summer, before the first day of school.
The assignment is to create two self-portraits, one external and one internal. This is my INTERNAL portrait.

Most of my inspiration came to me during a trip to Venice, Italy. Venice has a long cultural history of mask-making. During the renaissance, people in Venice would don masks (Like the "Bauta" on the table in the lower right corner) when going out for everyday life. Italy is also the birthplace of Comedia Dell'Arte, a form of masked theater.

In Venice, there are lots of shops that sell masks to tourists. Some of the stores are tacky, glittery souvenir stands, but others are real places of art. The stores I visited sold beautiful, authentic masks. Bautas, Harlequins, Voltos, Columbines, and incredible Commedia dell'Arte replicas. They also sold Plague Doctor masks, "il Medico della Peste."

What is a plague doctor? During the Black Death, when most qualified doctors had already run far far away, civilian doctors would dress in costumes —like the central figure in this painting— to protect themselves from plague and also warn others of their impending deaths.

I bought a few of these Venetian masks —a Bauta, a Medico, and a Columbina Foglia for my girlfriend— because they fascinated me.

Eventually, It was time for me to start thinking about what to do for my Perpich self-portrait project. I know what I look like on the outside, but the INSIDE? That's a mystery!

Then I realized something about masks! Masks are things that you wear on the OUTSIDE to change the way you look, in order to make it match the way you feel on the INSIDE.

This train of thought sparked a new obsession with philosophy in me, I realized that there are two worlds, the outer world of objects, and the inner world of ideas.

I used the masks I had bought as references for this painting. I researched renaissance fashion and designed the four costumes around the perimeter of the painting to represent different facets of my personality, particularly emotions. I chose to depict a fully dressed plague doctor for my objective side.

The emotions I chose for the four imaginary costumes are based on a quote:

"How do you know if you're happy or sad without a mask? Or angry? Or ready for dessert?" —Niel Gaiman, Mirrormask

I chose to make the plague doctor the central figure because I identify with the image. I enjoy science, and I also pretend to know a little bit about medicine. I try to look at facts in an intellectual manner, etc.

...I also diagnosed my friend Danny with the bubonic plague once. I wrote him a doctor's note (in my famously illegible "doctor" handwriting) saying that he could be excused from Gym, and the teacher almost believed it.

"you have it NOW?" he asked

I really like this! The coloring has a very soft look that I think fits well with it being an internal portrait.

I'm glad you like it.
I entered this into a juried art show a couple days ago and it got accepted!
so now it gets to be hung in an actual museum for a day.

I love this, it's wonderfully surreal. Lovely use of watercolours (I hate using them, they always seem to mess up my pics, but you've done it really well!) I love the idea of masks - this reminds me of The Merchant of Venice Well done on a great pic!

Good lord, can't wait to see this if/when you scan it. It looks chock-full of amazing. And I TRULY envy you getting to immerse yourself in that aspect of Italian culture. Nice work here. The style is very reminiscent of something I'd expect to see on "Drawn!".

Do you have a plague-doctor mask, by the way? I need one for a short film I'm shooting for DAFILM, y'see, and I'd love to borrow it if you'd be so kind to lend it out to a Perpich-Alum I know, y'don't know me and all that jazz, but I'd be willing to drive down to Perpich, pay you for a rental fee, and take the utmost care of it during the time I'd have it. I'd be willing to give you a full-quality hard-copy of the finished product, too.

I finally got the chance to scan it this afternoon, so no more reflections.

It's so cool that you're working on film on such a level after going to Perpich. That's one of the things that I sort of aspire to.

May I ask what your short film is about?

ryu-industries In reply to Skeleton-Boy [2007-10-04 05:54:36 +0000 UTC]

And the quality of the work truly shows now! Fabulous.

The short film is, by all appearances, a music video. I'm not much of a writer (It's why I make films instead. ), so I may not be able to explain much, but what I want to do here is take the essence of the song, and recreate it visually. The film would feature heavy use of silhouettes and noir-lighting styles, it would be black and white, and I feel that a plauge-doctor mask would certainly help embody the emotional "feel" of the song.

If you'd like, you could give a listen to the song yourself and try and see how the mask might fit into it: [link]

And a tip for if you REALLY want to get inspired to make films in the future: Get in good with Nancy Norwood and ask her about ANY contests, festivals, internships etc. that the media kids are applying for, and have her help you apply for them yourself. A couple festivals here, a couple wins there, and a few internships thrown in for good measure helped solidify the notion that film-making is what I want to do with the rest of my life. GREAT experiences, highly encourage you to get yourself involved with 'em.

Have a good one.

That sounds like the best music video ever. I love noir and plague doctors.

I'm actually making a mask right now as I'm going to be a plague doctor for halloween this year.
