my man, mr. taylor! how you been?
you know, lately i've been going through somewhat of an identify crisis regarding my "art." i've always been so focused on creating line work since i grew up on animation/comics. however, now that i'm really trying to get into painting (not just coloring), it's such a completely different beast and the lines really are almost irrelevant.
lately, i've just spent a tone of time watching people paint than actually drawing myself. i know what you've been talking about about the struggle now, and wanting to learn and improve so fast, but it's such a slow process.
thanks for the tips. what do you mean by color studies btw? not really sure how to go about that.
as always, appreciate your advice! hope you're doing well.

Hey man, indeed it is a slow process and slower when you don't have a teacher and people around you to bounce off of and compare your work to. danger is that you can get stuck in a rut of self improvement without doing what you originally started improving for.
it seems that you love sketching so never stop doing that
I think the starting point to learning how to paint is first understanding values, this is another term for grayscale, understanding that every single colour you see, corresponds to a given gray level, from light to dark. this is better seen when you have a photo and make a copy of it in black and white. you will see everything is certain ranges of gray. from there you have chroma, or saturation which increases the intensity of the colour on that value level.

for starters, it can be a good idea to actually begin painting only in black and white and only from black and white photos, to get used to the technique of painting like blending, and the medium you are using-oils,acrylic, digital etc. then start working from colour photos converting what you see to gray. squinting your eyes/vision really helps with this as it simplifies everything, knocking out a lot of subtle, inbetween information. from there you can start doing colour paintings when you are confident enough with your subject matter (figures, landscapes)
it helps also to paint from other painters, to see how they interpret what they see in their brush stroke style. Sargent, and Monet, Zorn, to name but a few.
you can simplify your studies by removing certain details to go for what you want. so basically your colour studies can look like this.

notice how he omits detail and just focus on shape and colour. they don't have to look like that, nor do they need to look pretty. just focus on what you want to get. pointless to focus on drawing a body when you really want to learn an arm.
when you move onto colour it really helps knowing color theory though as it helps things stick in your mind better.
like how brown originates from the secondary colour orange(brown is a darker orange, beige is a lighter orange), and olive green is actually a darker yellow.
im happy to see you going for it man!it can get quite heartbreaking im afraid, but bounce back. don't quit. just know that to do it for a job may not be possible. things can happen in life and whatnot, do it for you and for what you wish to show.
anyway I'm all good bro! I've joined the Royal Marines i think you guys think of them as your country's green berets. start recruit training soon. still drawing and painting though.
are you on instagram?

Thanks man. Those are great references. I'm just starting to get in a good groove as far as the brushes I'm using, which has really helped my workflow. Coloring in grey scale is good advice. That takes out a lot of the options I need to work about, and can really focus on the basics. I'm still grinding, but nothing is really come out that I'm all that happy with. But I'll start uploading some studies soon. Would appreciate any feedback from you since you've gone through the struggles already. As always, I'm very grateful for your feedback and help. If only I would have listened to you years ago -- I wouldn't have been stuck in my own comfort zone for so long.
As far as Instragram, I'm old school -- totally out of the loop on social media.

thanks, i hadn't filled in the details yet on her hair and just going from memory. i'll have to start looking at references once i start to go in with the finals.
btw, you've leveled up so much! your colors are what i aspire to get to at some point. they just always "pop" off the page.
