Linguists and psychologists have puzzled over Homer's word-choice as he repeatedly describes the Mediterranean sea as the "wine-dark sea." (I figure wine was the only household liquid in ancient Greece as dark as deep water, hence the analogy.) Today we're more likely to compare the sea to something blue. It's the very foreign nature of the ancient mind, such as Homer's mind, that inspired to me to draw this surreal piece.

The boat featured is ancient Greek, like any number of ships from Homer's written mythology. I had The Argo in mind when drawing this boat, and got the idea to draw it after watching the 1963 version of Jason and the Argonauts. I was also drawing inspiration from the Odyssey, which is another major Greek myth that takes place on such a boat.

This drawing is open to interpretation, but for me it was an expression of the enigmatic nature of Greek Myth, and an appreciation for the nautical underpinning of Classical Greek culture.

This is Jason's ship. This is Odysseus's ship. This is one of the thousand Greek ships that invaded Troy.
