I think its just gold colored, or its a thin layer of gold on top of what ever metal they are using.

I think they would. Gold is to soft and heavy to be used as armor. So i just think its a thin layer as decoration.

...Well, the guards may be separated into two types. Stationary with gold armor and the actual soldiers with steel armor.
