Wow - that's the thing I like to do the best! So kind of you to notice - Lighting around my house is just as weird as that in my gallery

Well youve nailed it
Oh youre welcome, i love your stuff!
And if the lighting is as weird in your house as is in your works that would be pretty eerie living there xD

but if it was a very dark room, didnt you use any light? I have some jars with animals I am photographing, but the lights on the jars keep returning

skulpturro In reply to Romy-Artworks [2010-04-08 14:55:11 +0000 UTC]

The light (flashlight) was above the crow, who was in a 30 Liter Fish Aquarium. Jars are not easy to photograph, which is why I have aquariums of many different sizes (4 - 150 Liters). Flat glass, dark room, one light.
Good luck!!

Almost like a greek statue honoring an ancient god. Crows have it going on, even after death and feather removal.
Thank You for your appreciation!!

Hey, welcome to the other side!! Thanks for your comment, as stinky as this crow was she was beautiful to look at. And the skin of pretty much every bird I have seen looks just like the crow's.

Aw, it's all bald.

There is a sort of dark beauty in this one, especially with the lighting... and I like the texture of the skin.

skulpturro In reply to seaweedprincess [2005-03-06 15:59:31 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I tried the feathered look in "Savior". Black feathers just don't work well in front of the camera.
I guess he came into the world bald, that might be a fitting end. And he STILL has his primary feathers, they just were beyond the frame of this photo....

Reminds me of a Sancho Panza-ism:

"Naked I was born, naked I shall die," or something like that.

Napoleon-chan [2005-03-02 23:12:57 +0000 UTC]

that is really cool, especilly where the feathers connect to the wing- i was imagining much more rot going on, but it looks pretty in a very unusual way like this. hooray for the elegance of death.

skulpturro In reply to Napoleon-chan [2005-03-03 05:56:43 +0000 UTC]

I've learned the secret to defeathering and defurring animals without rot settling in - a really cold bucket of water.

Wow, that was just about the weirdest thing I've ever said to somebody.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Napoleon-chan In reply to skulpturro [2005-03-03 23:23:12 +0000 UTC]

how long does it take for the fur or feathers to fall off like that? or does is vary quite a bit?

lol, it's not that weird of a thing to say

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

skulpturro In reply to Napoleon-chan [2005-03-04 19:09:11 +0000 UTC]

of course it's not weird. I love questions like that! Feather and fur drop depends directly on
1) The condition of the animal when I find it (how rotten - time since death)
2) Temperature of the water in the bucket I'm soaking it in (I soak to keep maggots away)

Looks can be deceiving - twenty days floating in warm water in a bucket creates a special kind of sauce
On the optomistic side, I'm sure that he she is VERY tender.

Looks a bit like a plucked chicken. Nice shadows on the skull and wings.
Interesting how the eye sockets on birds look so large when you see their skeletons, yet their eyes seem a lot smaller when they're alive.

She was very chicken-like from some angles; I would imagine even an ostrich would be. Thus the primary flight feathers were left in - hope the 'gooseflesh' wasn't too distracting. Imagine what plucked owl eye sockets would look like!! Thanks for the comment...

I dig it
You have such a good eye for displaying these amazing creations. Like something from the depths of Hell, but in a beautiful and mesmerizing way. I always enjoy visionaries like yourself who can take something that is considered 'morbid' and make it look so lovely and ethereal.

...I know, I know... you're probably getting tired of all the ...

Maybe if you posted something that SUCKED once in a while...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

skulpturro In reply to Akallabeth93 [2005-02-27 22:39:47 +0000 UTC]

I just show things the way they are, I think you perceive them as beautiful as I do. Only at DA do I get support for things such as this; I am rather ignored at places like GFX.

No, attention never gets old, you appear to be my #1 fan on DA at the moment, and I not only appreciate it but use it as fuel to stay motivated!! I usually will push myself to finish something if I think someone out there actually looks forward to it...

I don't have a really good feel for what does or doesn't suck; quite often I am surprised by DA response. I spent literally one hour tops on the dragon skull, and people mobbed it. Crap. It's always like that, which is why I fight the urge to try to create for an audience. You just never can tell.......

I'm sorry if I've bored you with all this

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Akallabeth93 In reply to skulpturro [2005-02-28 02:06:57 +0000 UTC]

bored, never. It's always interesting to hear what you have to say and see what your devious mind has created. You are a rare soul indeed.
I'm glad feedback keeps you motivated, as I am always psyched to see new pieces of yours in my watch box. You rock.
Seriously, I can't understand why your work isn't more widely accepted. I'm always shocked when you say that, as it never fails to blow me away. It is very VERY hard to pick a favorite, but I still can't stop thinking about several of them... such as 'Choir Practice', 'If Puppies Came From Eggs', 'Savior', the dragon skull, and the amalgam of vertebrae and skulls above your TV whose name escapes me at the moment (sorry). You not only deserve recognition and praise for your creations, you deserve to be making assloads of cash for them if that ever be your desire.

They may seem ordinary to you because they are a part of your world which you see and live in everyday, but to the rest of us it is a perspective on Nature rarely seen except in dreams and nightmares, and a true product of inspired vision. You have commented on several that you didn't spend much time on them, and imho I think that's what makes some of the simple ones really great... they sprang from inspiration/intuition, not from meticulous planning and design. (not that planned works aren't great, of course... you know what I mean.) You are a true channel of creative energy, and we are all lucky to have artists such as you in the world.

Now it is I who must apologize for boring you

in reply to your journal post, i used to have a photo of a mutilated, 2 day old rabbit kit in my gallery. the mother tore off three of its limbs and eyelids. very eerie, and recieve many negative responses (such as "OMG UR SICK!!!")

anyhow, i admire you for uploading this, and happy to see some positive responses (so far, anyway.)

Yeah, I have submitted stuff like this at other sites and have gotten some very odd reactions; mostly I'm just ignored tho. I think it's a credit to the open-mindedness of DA that people are so accepting of this kind of material. i DO try to be respectful......

This is a really fascinating piece of photography that I would never have known was a crow. The reason being because I have never seen underneath the feathers of one and you always expect them to be black. It mustve taken forever to remove EVERY feather too!!

..and to quote something youve already said as a comment "50 gallon aquarium, weights and restraints added to control buoyancy" << now THATS dedication

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

skulpturro In reply to syxx [2005-02-23 20:17:05 +0000 UTC]

Thankyou so much, I only removed the feathers I could yank out.....most of the primaries remain. More crow images will appear in future manipulations, this is just to introduce my latest "character". The photoshoot yielded nearly 20 great images, almost unheard of for one of my photographic forays.
And yes, when I want a subject to look a certain way I will spend hours working on it....

Thx as Usual, Chuck!!
