Love these edits of the old Nielson tanks, they're very neat if crude things. Where did you find this particular base image?

Thanks and online if I recall, annoyingly I didn't' know it was a cropped version until I was well into the editing process! You can see the full hi-def version on his Wiki page but Awdry must of originally seen it in 'The West Somerset Mineral Railway and the story of the Brendon Hills Iron Mines' which was published three years before 'Very Old Engines'.
Guessing you're not on SiF but if you ever do sign up a few of us have tried to look into Neil best as we can.

By the by Killian should be releasing a Neil shell quite shortly in OO scale, might be possible it could be rescaled to HO as well but it's quite a small prototype anyway.

Ooh, I have actually been thinking about making something like this in HO/00 with card/brass detail parts for some time, glad to see that there's some more refined kits of these being made.

Very clean edit too, I had only seen the cut-down version of this photo, didn't know there was more to it!

I have often thought about making Neil in both 0 gauge and 7 1/4" gauge.
A good scratch building exercise perhaps

Well it's sort of open ended but as I decided not to add the buffers in front of his face lets say it prior to 'Cross Patch', meaning it's somewhere between 1856 and May 1865

Thanks guys. I'm not sure if other programs would be better but it did take a while to colour in on Pixelmator I can tell you
Regarding his dumb buffers Steam-Powered-Cyborg I know what you mean about them not being plain a hard wood type colour ( oak? ) but if you look closely you can see that the facing side also has metal over it. Peter Edwards goofed in 'Crosspatch' as he gave Neil sprung buffers that were level with his buffer beam but he should of placed them on the upper section of the dumbs ( you can actually see that they're up high on the rear end ). Any-who I did try adding sprung buffers originally but couldn't make them look genuine and as they would of also blocked his face I left him in 'as built condition'   The vertical strips in green are a personal touch but I coloured the rest of the buffers red to sort of match the illustration. This metal wrapped dumb buffer engine should explain my reasoning.

This is genius editing. If only the buffers(?) weren't red.

Thanks  I don't really like trying to colour in B&W photos but i'm pretty pleased with how this turned out. The only thing that bothers me is that, at the time, I didn't know that the photo I used for the above was a cropped version of the original!
