Description I was listening to the Chrono Cross soundtrack when I thought about how irritated I was with Chrono Trigger because I never DID finish the game because it's so frustrating to focus on the characters and plot when mentally I'm forced to imagine ugly Toriyama designs. I'm sorry! Dragonball never did it for me, and part of the reason for this was because of Akira Toriyama's blocky, unelegant character designs. But whereas in Dragonball it makes SENSE because his style works for kicking ass and the occasional light humour, I can't imagine it working for other, more dramatic scenarios, i.e. those presented in many scenes during the course of Chrono Trigger.

...Anyway, Crono, Marle and Lucca drawn in um...not-Toriyama style. While doing this, I noticed that practically 80% of Toriyama's characters all wear the same tunic, belt, and shoes. I kept the clothes relatively intact for Crono, but I got rid of the tunic and bandanna for Lucca because I'm just not fond of such repetitious designs. Also, if I had room on the paper, I think Lucca would be wearing Converse Chucks instead of the stupid Toriyama-brand shoes.

AUGH. Toriyama!

That's all.

I love seeing realistic takes on "game" characters. Did you ever do a color version of this?

Great stuff.

I really would like for someone to depict the cast as they would have looked had the designers kept them as they were originally conceived by Masato Kato including the old sage (who possibly would have been one of the three Gurus). ref: upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia…

When I first saw some of the animations from the new Chrono Trigger (old-schooler SNES player here) I actually thought it was a DBZ thing. Upon realizing it wasn't I felt somewhat cheated. Akira Toriyama has given us a great series... if DBZ floats your boat, and deserves some praise. However all his characters look the exact same.

Thank you for giving me another way to look at my favorite characters, particularly Lucca!

I agree, I hate Toriyama's style. I always just had to play and imagine them in a different style, lol.

This is beautiful! You made everyone look great.

I guess I'm one of the few who like the Toriyama style... I feel it's simple, elegant and does a very good job in conveying all manner of emotions.

Personally I liked the art from both games, and being honest, Toriyama's art is what drew me to Chrono Trigger, as I was watching Dragonball before I knew about it (I had TV before I had Video Games....)

Wow, you're a CT fan(ish). I adore Chrono Trigger but yeah, hate the designs of the characters. They're okay when they're tiny, but you can't get any good pictures of them. Bless, these images make Crono look good

I definitely agree. Toriyama is an amazing artist, no doubt, but his style isn't good for epic fantasy RPG's. I've always loved the style for Cross much more.

Great artwork, by the way!

I'd like to think this is a good homage to the game, and the characters thusly. You did a wonderful job portraying the characters in a much better style than Toriyama's. (I agree, I don't like his style... *ugh*)

Again, wonderful job!

Personally, I liked the fact that Lucca and Crono's character designs incorporated the bandanna and tunic. It kind of suggests that since they came from the same hometown, it might be a common style among the teenagers there. I found that kind of interesting.
I must agree with you, though, that Toriyama's art style is not the most beautiful or elegant thing in the world. I like what you've done here to make the characters look less blocky and stuff.

One thing about Toriyama's Human designs are the fact that they are indeed repetitive but it's his Monster Designs that shine more than anything.

They look so awesome! Much better than Toriyama's style for them. Great job!

I like how Lucca came out. Are you going to add more detail?

I loved Dragonball (Toriyama should be forced to do 4 years of hard labor for making Dragon Ball Z).

Thank you!!! You're not the only one who's partial when it comes to Toriyama's designs.... Certainly, when CT was released it seemed like the artwork was do-able... but when the remake came out with the new anime clips...it just looked PUKY! Really horrible. I'd love to see new designs for the characters, and this sketch of you're looks REALLY nice!!!

aww. that's sad. I love Toriyama. I don't like DBZ. It was way too long and stupid. Toriyama himself didn't like it. But I like his art. Your versions of the characters are interesting though.
