Description Taken in Crossford, Fife. The ferns were blowing in the wind against the darken skies and the sun was peeking through and catching the ferns.

Oh man that would have been perfection if all of the longest fern was in focus but it's still a definite !

Yeah I'll bet! I just recently experienced the horror of trying to shoot plants in wind.

Wind, the weather type, the bain of all photographers

I should have included this in my original comment but I like your composition. You've got the gentle arc of ferns which guide the eye up to the peak of the giant fern, which is placed nicely around the top right thirds intersection.

Now I don't entirely know what I'm talking about because (embarrassingly) composition is something I just recently started taking seriously and I'm absorbing all I can, and I see some good stuff here.

Thanks a lot for that, appreciated. Composition, as you probably know, is all based on the Rule of Thirds (RoT, and it is a very good starting point with any image you take. If you not sure what I am on about Google RoT and learn all about it, or, if you like just ask questions, I do not mind in the least.

Yes I spent about an hour and a half last night reading an excellent collection of resources on composition and with lots of great examples and diagrams. I also went to the bookstore last night and I have my eye on an comprehensive book on composition. I think I'm quite familiar with RoT by now because I've read so many different resources on it.

Thats good, now all you have to do is put into practice, or at least think about it when looking through the view finder, along with all the other things as well

Yes I got a big idea in mind and I spent some time at the scene today, trying all sorts of angles and compositions, thinking about all the different compositional elements I've learned and creative ways to use them. And I took a bunch of shots for the purpose of analyzing on my computer what I like and don't like from each one so that I can refine and then go back on the right day at the right time and get that one golden shot. I want to blow people away with this one!

That's one way to do it, and if it works for you then great.
Whatever it is must be reasonably close to be able to go back, however, you will not always have that sort of comfort zone to play in.

What format do you shoot in JPEG or RAW.

Lithwood In reply to SnapperRod [2009-09-12 20:26:31 +0000 UTC]

Well yeah it's within easy walking distance of my house. I know different situations call for different techniques.

Most of my pictures older than a month old were shot in JPG but now I shoot raw just about all the time. Not only is the sheer flexibility of raw formats worth the huge file size, I'm also getting into HDR (that's what I walked out of the bookstore with last night).

Dead right there, RAW does give you much more flexability, and glad to hear that you are using it. Have not got into HRD yet, I find standard photography can keep me busy enough.

Thanks for that appreciated. It was the mood I was after. Took about 5 minutes to capture 6 images as the flower heads were never still.

I know that problem... Wind can be the biggest enemy in nature photography. Another reason to go for a macro lens by the way, cause of the low aperture (mine has 2,8)... Just a thought

Sadly the foreground part is a bit unsharp.
Otherwise really great capture. Awesome colors and mood!

It was actually blowing quite heavy at the time and this is the best of 6 shots. But it was the mood that I was after, the bright gold type flower against the dark clouds.
