Description ROCK FACE TUTORIAL FOR PHOTOSHOP CS2

(note: This Tutorial will work in ALL versions down to 4.0 however, some of the features were located in different areas in lower versions.)

OK! So my first Photoshop Tutorial is finished. I have done these before...but in Microsoft Word. So forgive me if it's not 'flashy' and neat looking like some others. I just didn't have alot of time. However, it does have a bunch of neat screen shots!

Please send me a note if you have any questions about this tutorial or any of the features listed. I'll help out any way I can.

Remember this is only 1 of 3. They get more complicated from here on out, but if you complete them, you will be stronger in Photoshop.

If you have the "limited" or "lite" version the channels won't be there.

Also, just like 'layers', 'colors', 'history', etc its a tab that you may have to show in order to see.

Use the help feature and type in channels in the search. If the function is supported in your version you should see it

took me a little while to figure it out (I'm a college student with no money, so I can only afford to have photoshop elements 6 ) but this is a cool effect. thanks for the tutorial.

Thank you. :3 That tutorial was really helpful. I just added one last step myself and hide the background by clicking on the EYE symbol. This is the result. --> [link]

Could this tutorial be used to make a oceanic cliff background thats already in the process of being made? I'm asking because I want to finish a picture today.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Snigom In reply to The-Reploidst [2009-02-16 02:46:57 +0000 UTC]

Well, its a texture generator. You can use it to create the rock face of a cliff, I wold play with it some instead of rendering it as is.

The-Reploidst In reply to Snigom [2009-02-16 06:05:23 +0000 UTC]

Well, I figured out an alternate way using the brush, but this would be good for stone wall textures and stuff.

So kudos to you good sir.

Thank you Its all an illusion, but it teaches the person using the tutorial how to use the Channels feature. So that anything you do Black & White can translate into 3 dimensions using the "render Light source" tool

Thanks again!

Snigom In reply to LadyPhoenicia [2008-10-11 22:08:52 +0000 UTC]

You're most welcome! In all honesty you're the only artist to have understood the lesson thus far. Most people render the exact formation I did and place it into their image; which is fine. However, you've used the technique in your own manner to generate the Mountain and I think the bridge/wall in the background. So I applaud you!

I'm glad that I was able to please the one who made the tutorial. It really gave me a step up in my drawing and gave it a good sense of realism. In so, I thank you again for your help.

for the record you must be in RBG Mode for this to work....apparently Ligting Effects and CMYK are not friends XD

took me ike 20 minutes to figure out why i couldn't get lighting effects to work...and i felt dumb. as soon as i finish what i'm using this tut for i'll post a link....by the by, this is a brilliant tutorial

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Snigom In reply to xgealicdraganx [2008-10-08 11:57:23 +0000 UTC]

Wow, you're right! I never used it in CYMK mode. I guess you'd have to render in RGB (probably a different file) and then import it to a CYMK file and re-adjust the colors.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

xgealicdraganx In reply to Snigom [2008-10-09 01:52:16 +0000 UTC]

for some ass-backwards reason i'm forever working in CMYK by default. i should change that becuase most stuff is more RBG friendly XD

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Snigom In reply to xgealicdraganx [2008-10-12 01:22:17 +0000 UTC]

Honestly speaking its truly the smarter choice to work in CYMK because it guarantees that what you do on-screen will be represented when it prints. When you work in RGB, it gets converted to CYMK anyway when it gets printed. SO what I do is work in RGB, then convert to CYMK and perform color adjustments as necessary.

hey cool pic. oh and uh... This may sound stupid but i am only 12... whats photoshop? how do you get it? and do you need to buy it or it for free?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Snigom In reply to Arceus-1 [2008-06-08 02:24:40 +0000 UTC]

Photoshop is a professional program that can be used to generate paintings, adjust photos, make web pages, or anything graphic. Sadly it isn't free Its most likely the most expensive software on the market. Luckily, students tend to get discounts when purchasing.

However, there are other programs out there you can paint with that are free like the program Open Canvas and Sai Tool. Run a google search on them and you should be able to find a free version. Although it will likely be limited in its functionality unless you pay.

This is a wonderful tutorial - but I only got a little bit into it. I do not appear to have a channel tab on the program that I use (Photoshop elements 3.0) I was wondering if you knew how to get the channel tab?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Snigom In reply to Radiantthunder [2007-03-20 15:28:29 +0000 UTC]

OH NO!!! The Elements version of Photoshop is a stripped down copy that does not have the Channels Feature I think the intended use of Elements is for basic photo correction and layout. You can paint with it...but alot of the rich and complex features were removed to make it cheaper and/or free

I am sorry

Thanks. There are more to come, trust me. I have two more in this genre. Theya re the fundamentals of Photoshop beyond just painting. You can generate amazing things in photoshop with a wacom. I know a ton of wonderful things that people rarely use. Like Layer Properties, Quick Mask Mode, and Channel effects.

Yes, it is always fun to discover a filter or property that makes a cool effect for your image. Personally, I've fallen in love with the chrome filter and the transform tool !
