Description Just a simple shot of what the inside of my dragon puppet looks like, so you can see how the ball joint and cable are placed and stuff. There's hardly any info out there about how to make a cable puppet, so I want to share any info I can.

Note that the cable's sheath is glued to the wire armature. It's important that the sheath be anchored to something that won't move, because there has to be resistance for the cable to work! I later added wires for legs, which gave the whole armature enough stability for the mech to work smoothly. Also, the ball joint has to be pretty loose. If you use the method I did, ([link] ) use a few extra balloons to insure enough space. I think I used six or seven on this one.

Sorry my desk is junky. D:

I made this years ago, I haven't dabbled in puppetry in a long time. I don't have energy or time to do a tutorial, sorry. There's plenty of information out there though, you just have to look hard enough. You need to be looking for animatronics, not puppets. Cable controls are a very standard thing in animatronics.

This is great thanks! I am looking to make a dragon with a long neck and all I want him/her to do is to be able to move its head up, down, left and right. but there is very little in the way of instructions out on the big wide web that I can locate.

Cool! Nicely detailed. You would probably get better side to side motion with a push cable like I did, assuming the head is light weight. I found brake cables to "grind" when turning. Thanks for that link!

I just about cried when I found this, I've been working on my puppet for weeks and never got the movement right. I love you.

lol I'm glad I could help. Check out the other pics I uploaded too, especially this one: [link] This is my oldest mech, and the newer one is a bit better.
