Synopsis: “Spider Man and Hobgoblin must take down the Sinister Six.”

Well, here we are, the season 1 finale of Marvel’s SpiderMan, a two parter that manages to both leave you satisfied and leave you wanting more. Let’s dive into this, with some heavy spoilers by the way. Part 1 starts with Peter trying to make amends with Harry, but has to leave in order to go save someone. That someone happens to be Max Modell, who was kidnapped by Doctor Octopus and his Sinister Five. When Spiderman tries to stop him, he gets brainwashed into Doc’s army, making the Sinister Six. Harry dons the Hobgoblin armor that his father gave him at the end of “Spider Island” , and tries to snap him out of it. They succeed in taking down most of Doc Ock’s army, which continues into part 2. However, the Hobgoblin is knowingly attacking Spiderman, until it’s revealed that Norman Osborn created a duplicate armor to take him down.

Wow! That was just intense! So, what I can gather from these episodes is a reinforcement of what makes the show good, that is about being there for others even with their faults, but this goes a bit further in saying that you shouldn’t be associated with someone who’s just using you.

The main bulk of the story is again about Peter and Harry’s friendship, but with an interesting angle. It’s mainly about showing how they’re always there for each other. Regarding the former, he’s shown to be in top form with his heroism, but is still struggling with the idea of who he should trust, especially considering what happened in the previous episodes. Regarding the latter, he still has that aura of grudge to him, yet is ultimately just trying to be successful. What makes their dynamic click stems from how Peter has just let the trauma cloud his judgement,, and is very persistent in trying to help Harry, while Harry, even with a grudge and resorting to dirty tactics, just wants to be successful and be a man for others.

This is also reflected in our main villains, Doc Ock and Norman himself. While the former is really reveling in the villainy, it’s only because he wants recognition for his genius and wants to get back at others who supposedly wronged him. Regarding the latter, he’s firmly established as pure evil here. He seemed like a well intentioned extremist, but the fact that he pretty much disowned Harry for not living up to the expectations he set up for him, to the point of attacking him, is what seals the deal.

The action is pretty suspenseful, with heart that manages to pull it through, make everything a pulsating race. The ending opens up a lot of interesting ideas. Put simply, Norman meets his demise, and Harry takes over his position, yet still stays friends with Peter. The latter is also recognized for his heroism as Spiderman, even if no one knows who he truly is. In essence, everything wraps up nicely with a message on being a good friend and person in order to reach your potential, which brings things around full circle. It’s a great way to close out season 1.

Here is the cast for the episodes.

Robbie Daymond as Peter Parker/Spider-Man, Guard 2

Max Mittleman as Harry Osborn/Hobgoblin, Guard 1

Fred Tatasciore as Max Modell, Bystander

The Season 1 finale was very unexpected, in a good way. And I'm curious as to what they're building towards in Season 2, whether Harry or Norman will take up the mantle of the Green Goblin.

I am a bit annoyed that again, we get Hobgoblin before Green Goblin, despite Green Goblin coming first in the comics. But it makes more sense here than it did with the 90's Spider Man cartoon.
