Yeah I needed to keep the likeness of the characters and that is what lead to Carls younger appearance.

Then again if you have something that ends up aging and bulking him up or just the latter you solve you whole issue. Carl likely works out every day (which is proven with correct diet to slow apparent aging rather signifantly) while his son is rather bulked for 14 and thus appears older. I love loop holes.
