Tristan is an adventurer, an old soul with a love of abandoned buildings and the solitude of the desert sky. He loves people too, far more than he loves himself. He does his best to serve them to the best of his ability through his work as a farmer, and he loves helping people out, especially by being a shoulder to cry on. Despite his altruistic tendencies, he can be arrogant and tends to act as if he's got it all figured out, and everyone else needs to catch up. He also likes to poke into people's business, and while he's no gossip himself, the secrets he could spill would shock the neighborhood.
Flying is his passion, and he's tried quite a few risky stunts, usually on his own and far from medical help. He's got a few self-destructive tendencies, and will occasionally disappear for a few days in a row, leaving no notice and being cagey about where he's been when he returns. Usually he's just traveling or exploring Serora, though, and he feels it adds to the mystery if people don't know where he's been.
Naturally a curious individual, he spends a lot of time experimenting with his plants and trying to grow exotic species from Aquore and Eithne in a little greenhouse he's built for the purpose. He loves to show people around his little farm, and he spends at least a night every month in Osulas, selling his wares and, afterward, talking to the people he meets. It doesn't matter whether they're strangers or old friends, he just loves to talk to people. He's passionate about everything he does, and this extends to his relationships, which tend to be very all or nothing.
Despite being strong in his convictions, he's easily influenced by the personalities and attitudes of others, and tends to start 'reflecting' people he spends a great deal of time with. It's something he's struggled with since he was a foal, and it wasn't until his mid-twenties that he was able to really shape himself into his own person.

History

"I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland." - Isaiah 43:19

Childhood:

He was born into a family group consisting of grandparents and their four grandchildren, three of whom were happily married and with children of their own. He was born to the oldest son and his wife, who were overjoyed to welcome their first child.
His youngest uncle was like an older brother to him, there being only a 5 year age gap. They explored and were extremely close friends, and his uncle was the first person to teach him an appreciation for his wings even before he was old enough to use them.
After an incident in which a young Tristan tried to imitate his uncle’s areal acrobatics, his uncle gave him the nickname Swoop, which became the name his family and close friends used for him. His wings couldn't grow in soon enough, and he loved to jump and see how far he could soar, even before he could really generate any lift.
His uncle left to try and become a Fleet Foot when Tristan was eleven. Tristan was devastated by the loss of his best friend but tried to carry on, as usual, to be brave like his uncle. He threw his efforts into helping his family as a gatherer, putting aside playing with the other foals and acting 'mature.' His attempts largely backfired, and for a while he was stressed and lonely, unsure of what do do with himself now that his idol was gone. He turned to Alya in his loneliness, praying to the Goddess often and developing a close personal connection with her.

Teenage Years:

He eventually recovered after his uncle left, and began to build himself back up. He began to be glad, in a small way, that his uncle was gone, because now he felt he could become his own person instead of a reflection of his hero.
In his Ceremony of the Rising Wind, which occurred when he was a little over fourteen, he was quick to feel a strong connection with Alya, and he felt a sense of guiding which lead him into a ravine, and, when he believed himself trapped and lost, revealed an oasis filled with plants (several of them quite rare) hidden in its depths. He wasn't quite sure what Alya was guiding him towards, but the plants and seeds seemed to be a fairly clear sign. He decided to become a Gatherer as his parents and grandparents had been.
He apprenticed under his grandfather and threw himself into learning the art of gathering, eager to be the best he could be. It wasn't terribly difficult, considering he'd been helping his family since he could remember, but there were many small tricks and habits he needed to learn to be able to find the best plants quickly and efficiently.
He continued to practice his flying on his own, partially as a way to remember his uncle. None of the other children in his family were interested in flying as anything more than transportation, but he loved it for its own sake. It was during this time, as he interacted with other herds when helping take the crops to market, that he realized loved farming even more than gathering. The art of agriculture, shaping the land so that it could produce to the best of its ability, was extremely rewarding for him, but he was content to remain a gatherer, believing it was what Alya wanted from him.
A small famine and some personal difficulties between members of the group forced his family to stay in one location, and they moved near Osulas for several years. The interpersonal turmoil threw him for a loop and he distanced himself from his family slightly. In this time, he met other teenagers near the city and developed a certain suave charm that he used to hide from solid, close relationships. He wasn't sure exactly what he was hiding from, but he was sure he didn't want to risk being hurt as he had been by his uncle. Avoiding close friendships seemed the best way to avoid that.
He flirted constantly with pretty much anything that moved and began to fly more to show off than for the joy of it. He also started shirking work to hang out with friends, making the division with his family worse. He became a showoff and started to feel more and more out of place. He wasn’t particularly close to anyone, despite having a large friend group and being generally popular and well-liked, and despite that being partially by choice, he still felt he was lacking... something. His connection with Alya had been somewhat lacking, and he'd not been paying the goddess the attention he had when he was younger. He decided he was going to go find his uncle since the older horse hadn’t made any contact with the family in years.

Adulthood:

He assumed his uncle was not in Osulas, as his family had been in the area for a few years, so he decided to start in the south and work his way north, covering as many settlements and wandering groups as he can. Before he could finish his plans and leave, though, he found his uncle in Osulas. It turned out his uncle couldn’t make it as a warrior, mostly due to lack of early training, and had become a water gatherer. He had been avoiding his family out of embarrassment.
Both he and his uncle were very different people at that point, and their reunion was nothing beyond civil. His uncle didn’t want to go home, having settled into his new life. Tristan, who had already been feeling lost, was crushed. He tried to ignore it and shove it aside as he had when his uncle left, but this time it was harder. In his unhappiness, he turned back to Alya, praying daily and trying to divine her will for his life.
After several days of prayer, he decided to spend some time wandering Sedo, following the plan he’d intended to use to find his uncle. His family didn’t expect him back for some time, and he was young, so he figured there was no better time to see his homeland.
He spent four years wandering Sedo, starting at the Sear. He didn't enter it, though, not feeling ready. He traveled through the Valley of Melodies and met many different Serorans and Vagabonds while avoiding major settlements and spending a lot of time alone. During his travels, he came to terms with his problems with his uncle and his need for acceptance by others, and while he would continue to struggle with it, he became far more mature as a result. It was largely the solitude which guided him to this conclusion. With no one to rely on but himself, he finally shaped his personality on his own, without the overpowering influence of other horses. He picked up flying again and became quite practiced in a number of areal feats of acrobatics. The Valley of Melodies was his favorite place to fly.
Toward the end of his travels he fell in with a small traveling group, intending to stay with them for a few days. He fell in love with one of their number, though, a black pegasus mare named Deryn. As weeks stretched into months he realized his feelings weren’t reciprocated. Despite this knowledge and after much soul-searching, he confessed his feelings to her. She confirmed that she did not feel the same way, and he, not wanting to make things awkward for her, left the group.
He didn't have anywhere else to go, so, after nearly five years on his own, he decided to return to his family, uncertain of how he would be received. He was welcomed back with open arms not long before his twenty-fifth birthday. Having reunited with them, however, he found that he no longer fit in. While the old squabbles had been cleared up, he wasn't comfortable with them anymore. He stayed with them for nearly a year and quickly fell back into the rhythms of his childhood, helping his family with gathering, watching the children, and selling what they found.
He told everyone how and where his uncle was, and his grandparents immediately left for Osulas to tell their son it was all right to come home. His parents took as leaders of the group (as much as they had any direct leaders) until they should return, which was a few weeks later. Their uncle still refused to come back, claiming he was happy where he was.
By the end of a year, he was miserable. Gathering and living with family were all well and good, but it brought back many unhappy memories, and he was uncomfortable with who he was becoming as he slipped back into his old routines. He’d also realized he preferred farming, caring for land instead of simply passing through it as he looked for plants and other supplies. One day he found himself back at the oasis Alya had led him too, and realized it was the perfect place to set up a small farm. It was near Osulas and along his family’s favorite traveling route, putting him near the two most important things in his life.
His parents were a little dismayed at their son’s sudden change of profession, but not terribly surprised. They hadn’t failed to notice how unhappy he was since returning and were willing to support him, especially since this time he would be staying close by. Now nearly twenty-seven, he finished hollowing out a cave in the ravine wall and outfitted it as his home. He began growing crops, most of which he gives to his family to sell.

Present Day:
He's been working his small farm for a little under two years and has mellowed a lot. He's fully come to terms with what happened with his uncle and is starting to consider making a family of his own, though he's not totally sure how to go about it. He grows corn and beans mostly, along with some more exotic crops as a hobby, and he still flies as often as he can. Recently he's added a small shrine to Alya in the center of his fields, where he feels most at peace.
