This was one of the many place-holder or choices for the Chaos Emeralds, this is the ''YELLOW'' emerald from Sonic 3/Sonic & Knuckles/Sonic 3 & Knuckles, and because of this emerald we dont have Sonic & Knuckles-styled Super Yellow Emerald D:
The emeralds we're being chosen since Sonic 1, so they colors weren't canon until SEGA finally made the canon emeralds around Sonic Adventure I think:

it's actually regular blue but it looks dark when you out it next to or near the llight blue one due to the contrast but it is Red Blue Yell Green Gray Purple, as of Sonic 2 the Light Blue emerald was insterted in between Gray and Purple making it #6 and making Purple #7. The Super Emeralds, the yellow one becomes Orange however through a sort of cheat (through stage select and sound test) there's an 8th emerald and the 8th super emerald is yellow the 8th chaos emerald i dont remember check it out on youtube just type in Sonic 3 & Knuckles 8th Emerald

Yeah, i know that secret or glitched emerald, but some emulators make that 8th emerald golden more than just yellow, that's a little thing i know. And Sonic Retro's info about the 8th emerald is enough, and i already picked up my old Genesis with my old Sonic 3, and Sonic & Knuckles cartdriges (Yep, i was lucky to buy these two masterpieces) and did the thingie in the Sound Test, and easily beated the stages with my special stage amazing skills.

Umm... has there ever been an orange chaos emerald? I thought they were Red, Blue, Yellow, Green, Purple/Pink (I'm kinda colorblind), White, and Aqua Blue

I find it annying how the orang emerald keeps changing withe the light blue emerald in some games

the orang is more than likely a darker version of the yellow. I think they originally ment it to be yellow but they scene made it look more orange than yellow.

i never see an orange chaos emerald. the colours are:
- green;
- red;
- yellow;
- light blue;
- dark blue;
- purple;
- a color which is white or gray.

and i think there is an orange chaos emerald in sonic the fighters
