Description

Im not quiet sure abou this photo something is wrong, it could be that he doesnt look quiet in focus, but i am thinking that it is his soft waxy feathers... I dunno

The Cedar Waxwing (Bombycilla cedrorum) is a member of the family Bombycillidae or waxwing family of passerine birds. It breeds in open wooded areas in North America, principally southern Canada and the northern United States.
The Cedar Waxwing eats berries and sugary fruit year-round, with insects becoming an important part of the diet in the breeding season. Its fondness for the small cones of the Eastern Redcedar (a kind of juniper) gave this bird its common name.

This species is irruptive, moving south in huge numbers if the berry supply fails in winter. It feeds in flocks outside of the nesting season, often in large flocks numbering hundreds of birds.

When the end of a twig holds a supply of berries that only one bird at a time can reach, members of a flock may line up along the twig and pass berries beak to beak down the line so that each bird gets a chance to eat.

Hi there! Your photo is quite nice.

I'm from Puebla, Mexico. You probably know that the Bombycilla cedrorum (or chinito or ampelis as is called here) comes to Mexico in his travel to the south. Well they do. Here in my city almoust anybody knows about them. So I'm doing a education poster of this birds. I allredy talked with the directors of two important parks of the city, and the poster will be there with a volonteer giving explanations.

The birds come to my garden last week, but I could not take a photo as good as yours and I do not find on the web one large enough. So, the question is.... Would you let me use your photo? I will give all the credit it deserves, and it will don't be for a comercial use.

I have some video of this birds if you like them and I'm planing to make a video, if you have some material.

Β‘Gracias desde Puebla!

Well my old eyes think it's in focus and it's just the nature of the bird that makes him look soft. Lovely composition; I didn't agree with the person who said there was too much on the right hand side. It's just right

Something doesn't look quite right, you are right. But the image isn't bad either. I may just be the smoothness of the bird, which is beautiful. I wish there was some here for me to photograph. Very nice image.

Thanks Jake ... prolly 99% of the photos of these bird i have seen have had that soft look... my guess is that it is their plumage.... unless ya sitting right on top of them to see detail...lol

GORGEOUS! These are beautiful birds anyway, but this is a stunning capture. Excellent composition, great colors and a very interesting pose combine to make a very lovely capture. I wouldn't change a thing, Leisa. Just gorgeous...

Hi, Like this one, I find that all pics of cedar wax wings are this soft blurry look, I think it has to do with the bird not your pic... Perhaps there is a bit to much on the right, might have cropped it a bit more on that side..otherwise fabulous job!

Sonny2005 In reply to ocularimages [2006-10-20 11:45:36 +0000 UTC]

Yes after looking online at photos of these guys i agree it is in focus.. and the softness comes from the birds them selves Thank you mate

Well, I think it's a gorgeous shot. Cedar waxwings are beautiful birds. I think that illusion of softness or its being out-of-focus is the bird's own coloring.

Sonny2005 In reply to dana-martinez [2006-10-23 10:11:35 +0000 UTC]

Thank you dana and i think you are right about the feathers... every photo i have seen is similar to this in focus..

Very welcome.
The only photos I ever got of cedar waxwings look the same - but, of course, I had moronically forgotten to switch out of macro mode (which I am still kicking myself for!), so I am left to wonder how accurate a representation it really is.....

q-118 [2006-10-19 18:09:07 +0000 UTC]

It's got the softness of a portrait shot i think, maybe that's what you think is wrong.
I think it's an excellent capture. Well done.
