Thanks , and my advice to a beginner would be to work on getting the proportions right first, that's the hardest part in my opinion. If you struggle with this the "grid method" can be really helpful, where you draw a grid of squares or rectangles on both your paper and the picture you're drawing from, making sure they're in the same proportions.
As for the shading, I like to start with the lighter tones, in something like a HB pencil, using a stump to blend with, and then I use a darker softer pencil, in this case a 6B in the darkest areas. To get an even finish do several layers of the dark shades, and blend with a stump in between.
