This is the right way to do a low light shot. Flash would have blown your features, created unsightly shadows, and created otherwise muddy skin tones.
Here you have enough light to give good color and some really nice cast shadows. Be careful not to over-saturate color if/when editing low light shots. Low light naturally subdues color.
