This is Joseph Kolinski. I originally wanted to call this "The Belter" or "(Joe the) Belter" as part of a portrait series with the titles formatted like a song; I wanted to summarize the subjects with one word, but I felt it was too forced. I think it actually hindered its effectiveness in telling the viewer what the piece was about. He's a very wonderful soul. I originally only knew him as The Celebrant in the 10th anniversary performance of Leonard Bernstein's MASS: www.youtube.com/watch?v=RL96d8… It's fucking phenomenal, by the way. It's not just praising religion; it gets into how crummy it is, too. I also heard him in The Human Comedy as Toby: www.youtube.com/watch?v=ucXQdK… and he was in the original Broadway cast of Les Miserables.

If you've heard him before, you'd definitely be able to pinpoint his distinctly boisterous voice. That volume was something I really wanted to capture here, though I think his expression isn't as intense and powerful as it looked in the reference. He actually looks kinda peaceful somehow (or as if he's at the tail end of his breath). He's obviously a passionate performer and actor, but if you knew his background, you'd understand those gleeful moments on stage were his only solace. He was essentially letting it all out!

He's now 70-years-old with a YouTube channel. It's a continuous biography expressed (and performed) in poetic, analogical formats and even in plain spoken word or storytelling. A portion of it talks of his experiences while in Broadway if you're interested in that, too. A very sweet, insightful, and passionate guy. I can't quite describe the depth of his appreciation and love. Just comment any kind of nice comment and he'd start talking to you like you were an old friend or niece or nephew or something. It's fuckin' charming LOL.
