Great work on this! I like the shading and the shirt is really well done. ^^
I struggle to mix graphite with charcoal. Do you have any tips?

I'm not an expert in mixing graphite and charcoal. I've tried to keep separate the area with graphite from the area with charcoal. They not mix, beacause have a different matter, so I used charcoal for the very black areas and for the area where I need soft shade, as in the shirt.
Thank you for appreciating.

As a fellow pencil pusher, I have to say this is truly incredible! A true work of art.
* Judging from the direction of his eyes and the appearance of his mouth, I believe this was based off of a photograph of the titled person. OR maybe he held that look on his face for hours so the artists can draw him. But my guess is this is a still art illustration.
* I used the word photographed, Because the detials are phenomenal. I can see every strand of his hair with alternating whites and black streaks. The black dots on his shirt are prissily placed on. Not just randomly dotted here and there. And the best use of smudging is applied for shaded areas of skin.
* Charcoal itself is a very messy tool to use by hand. always smudgy and dirty. But totally necessary to create dark areas within an image. And solid marking between the charcoal blackness and the white of his collard shirt is superb. No finger prints at all!
* I do not know anything about this man. But a quick Google/Wikipedia search of his name says that he is a great man. And still alive to boot.
* Also, I am both fascinated and Curious about the edges of this art work. It totally shows that this is indeed "Traditional Art". Crafted by human hands, Not calculated by computers. Although it appears that you had probably used old newspapers to keep the very edges of the paper from getting to dirty to handle. Nice work there! I wish I knew to do that back in college.
* Last but not least. You typing in the size of 33 Centimeters by 28 centimeters makes you realize the skill of the artist. It must have been very hard to work on a medium square sheet of paper. (And personally, I choose to use Centimeters over inches when measuring body proportions. It's just more accurate that way.)
Overall, Only a real life artist can create such imagery. Just about every professional on DeviantArt uses computers to create great works of art. But only the traditional artists will create art works that are timeless. Both inside and outside the internet. I could totally imagine seeing this image hanging in an art gallery at a county fair! (Trust me, I've seen plenty of thous!)
Peace.

I have really few words! I'm so happy to receive such a great comment!!! I'm very very flattered for these words, I'm very happy you appreciate so much my work! Yes, this drawing is based on a photo reference. I'm especially glad you appreciate hair, because in general I don't love to draw hair and often I am not satisfied by the result. Charcoal is a very dirty ware, you're right... I used old newspaper to prevent dirt and eraser! Traditional drawing, in my opinion, conveys more feeling, more emotions and a sense of reality, of matter, that's why I use it. Shirt was a very hard work! But I'm totally satisfied!
THANK YOU VERY VERY MUCH!!!

Details deserve a quite amount of patience, you're right. As you can see I'm not fanatic of hyper-realism, I love a global overview of the drawing and a balance of black and whites. This drawing took more or less 2/3 hours a day for three days. I'm not so patient as others artist you could meet here!!!
