It was certainly a film that got under your skin in a way most media of the new millennium never did. Equally easy to love and loathe, but utterly impossible to forget. Remember seeing it on television when it was fairly recent, and finishing it with an unspecified feeling of having watched some immensely disturbing yet fundamental aspect of cartooning.
Moebius used to say that as a cartoonist, there is only one goal: Establishing a popular character. Something he himself both desired, somewhat achieved with Blueberry, and actively strived to avoid. Wouldn't be surprised if some of the worse parts of Monkeybone were not actually so much poor as they were inaccessible, dealing with some self-experienced artist's fear of being dominated by juvenile but successful creations.

Victim of your own success.
Funny enough, however, is that I was most engaged and interested during the coma scenes. when everything returns to the real world is my least favorite part of the movie. The coma dream world in Monkeybone has left me with a sense of intrigue and wonder that I very rarely seen and felt again since. This movie, despite a poor critical reception and far from being a perfect movie, has left a very permanent impression on me.

She looks like the sort of character I'd like to know more about! I haven't heard of this movie, but it's now on the bucket list.

It's not a good movie and you can probably just skip the final third act, but there is some interesting things to see

Those interesting things to see would be the best part for me -- I've seen some pretty awful movies, but loved them for their visuals. "Cinderella: Once upon a Time in the West" comes to mind. This was a French movie originally titled "Cendrillon au Far West" -- a cgi furry thing that revolved around a bizarre story involving Cinderella, cowboys, and monkey-pirates lost in the desert.

Ah Cool world, a film hamstrung and neutered by executive meddling. I actually really love Ralph Bakshi. Coonskin remains a very relevant commentary on race in the United States. His history in the industry is a fascinating tale of a man constantly fighting tooth and nail against the powers and for his creative vision. I have also met him on several occasions. Very interesting man.

Oh yeah. Tons of problems with his projects. As much as I love his works, I definitely admit the many faults, even with him as a person. However, I can't help but admire Bakshi as a creator and artist for his recognizable and unique presence. Of course, he would think I'm a pretentious prick for discussing him like this. Bakshi is one of the least pretentious artists I have met. You can never take the Brooklyn out of that man. Why he retired to a small town in New Mexico, I will never know, maybe he just wanted some peace.
