Description 9.27.10 UPDATE: Now available as a print due to popular demand!

The picture pretty much explains itself.

I'm doing this because I'm tired of artists who seem to have no faith in themselves and forget that all those skilled artists they look up to were once like them. So you think you suck? EVERYONE sucked at one point in their lives. Back when I was 15/16, my drawing and character design skills were very mediocre, as you can see. If I can improve this much in just three years, anyone can.

Of course, as my teacher would say, "Practice does not make perfect -- PERFECT practice makes perfect." If you keep doing things the wrong way over and over again, chances are, you won't go far. So get out there and learn!

UPDATED 11.12.2007
When I first uploaded this picture in 2003, I got a great response. People sent me notes and e-mails telling me how this has inspired them to keep trying their best instead of giving up on their art. Some have even printed it out and put it up on their walls as a motivational reminder.

When I entered the month of November this year, I thought it would be neat to do yet another redesign of this bunny boy. He is neglected, but he's one of my first original characters, so drawing him again was a nostalgic feeling.

The 2003 version feels too "Final Fantasy" to me and doesn't suit his character, but I did like certain elements. The newest version is a combination of '00 and '03 Damien. He looks like he's grown a bit older, too.

UPDATED 10.30.2009
A little early -- It's not quite November yet, but I'm updating this now because in November I'm going to be too busy inking the official Last Airbender prequel manga (tight deadline).

I originally put up this deviation in 2003 when I was still just a student fresh out of high school. Honestly, I didn't think I'd update this after 2007, but as the picture states, I've been on a fast track in my career and I'm now an Eisner Award winner. I thought it was a significant point in my progress as an artist, so here we are.

It's 2009 now and I've redesigned Damien again...sort of. This time, instead of changing his design, I redrew him in his old design from 2000, standing there as he did back then instead of using a more interesting pose.

I always thought his 2000 design was hideous, but it holds up surprisingly well! I guess it goes to show that any design can look good so long as it's well-executed. I'm surprised by how much my style has changed in the past two years; I didn't think it did very much before I drew this.

I'll update this the next time I feel it appropriate to.

It definitely gave me encouragement. I really admire all your work, but this one in particular gave me some extra drive.

O.o You know, it's really amazing how much somebody can improve in just a few years.

Oddly enough, myself included. I'd never belive anybody who said that the version on the left was yours.

^^ You really are an inspiration. I'm nearly 16 now and I've been drawing since i was about 11. I've changed a lot since then and I'm still far from your level of REALLY good stuff, but you really inspire me to work on improving. I hope I'm that good in a few years. Keep on drawing because there are people who look up to you. ^.~

So true. I look at my eighth grade sketchbook that was done about a year ago, and I think to myself, wow, did I ever suck. It's a very positive outlook in drawing - anyone can get better with practice!

Oh, wow. I cant help but want to thank you for that. ^^ its so motivating. And you dont see to many artists who're brave enough to show people their art from before they became famous. This helps so much. Thanks again.

;_; Wow, this is inspirational. Um, yeah, I'll work hard everyday to make myself better. And for your animation teacher saying "Practice does not make perfect -- PERFECT practice makes perfect." my history teacher says that, too. Or something like that. But seriously, thanks.

Hey there, I just wanted to say that this really made my day. I've got a lot of emotion and deep work I'd love to get animated in Flash, but have been holding back for a really long time because my drawing skills are sub-par. But that's alright, I just keep forgetting that there's always room for improvement *smacks head*. Well, I hate to ramble so just....thanks

I know exactly what you mean. When I flip through my artbook and see my stuff from the last three years, I point and laugh at how stupid they looked. It's a pity that it takes time. I probably have to wait another three years until I'm any better, and until my character designs dont anger me.

what u say here should really be encouraging but ive heard it before and im not a great one for self-confidence. My arts quite good and i take lessons (not great) but my main dire problem is that all my pictures are copied. When my pencil touches paper and i try to draw without a model picture i just spas out and fail . I can enlarge a picture, decrease its size, replicate it, shade it but i cant for the life of me do my own character designs. After you've seen what i've drawn its hard to believe that even my doodles boil down to stickmen. Maybe i should get new lessons or keep trying? Anything to say or any tips?

Oh and by the way ive rabbled for a bit ^_^;; I like the pic. Great thought. Cya round

or if you do something wrong, you should take note of it and not repeat it. Very big improvement in the character, hopefully I'll improve that much (it's been 2 years so far, and I seem to be getting there :3)

The first one is still good, thought not as good. The point is still loud and clear, and its about time somebody took a stand.

Didn't you go to art college though? I'm sure anybody who goes to art college will learn a thing or two while there.

Kudos to you.

That actually makes me feel a bit better about how I draw. Because I constantly think I suck.

You've made my day, Space Coyote!

I have to say I really apperciate when advanced artist put up their past rendetions. It shows that it does take practice, work and deication. For a moment I become inspired and have a renewed sense of self, shouting "I Can!". I feel a fevered rush to draw without reason till my fingers bleed. Then I remember That I am lazy. But there is always that moment that "I Can!"

In all seriousness this is what inspires me most, not the grandure of the finished product but the background in which made it all possible. I thank you and all those who have taken the time to show the path in which they came about.

BTW- It looks good- Real good

There is hope to be found! Hoorah!
You know my art teacher said that exact same quote. There must be some kind of art teacher cult where they're taught to tell us these things.

Character critique: (not that I have any place to do so. You've got much more experience than I do.) I'm defintely seeing the character development. The puffy pants at the thighs mimic a rabbit's hind legs very well. Strong jumpity-ness. (Was that intentional?) Also the big bunny feet and the hands - I like large hands - contribute to the rabbit feel. I don't think I would have thought of lop ears myself, but looking at it they have more definition and just seem more real instead of the upright kind.

And the sword design is bitchin'! For lack of a better word. ^__^; May I ask what you used to reference for it? Or is that completely out of your head for the most part?
