Description Watercolor painting I did of the Joker. This was the first published work I ever did for DC that was actually mine and not just ghostwork for other artists. But hey, I guess you gotta' start somewhere.

Dude this is very nice work. This is what Joker would look like if Batman killed him.

Thanks.  But ya' know.... I would imagine Joker wouldn't mind this kinda' beating if it only managed to frustrate Batman.  He's a dick that way.  lol

Awesome piece! Had the pleasure of chatting with you on Saturday at the VA Comiccon. Really admire your use of watercolor and the results.

Especially loved this Joker and the pointing Spiderman you had in your book.

Lots of kudos man.

Whew, this is amazing work, the precision, technique and stylisation are wonderful.

The realism of the eyes is great, and my favourite part is the colour scheme of the areas surrounding the eyes, it makes me feel painful just to look at it.

The green hair makes a good contrast to the warm palette, too.

The most eye-catching part of this is the jaw and detailed teeth, the abstract splatter coming from it gives a shocking appearance and also blends in perfectly with the mouth. The neatness of this area (the clean white against all the chaos around the jaw) really completes the piece.

One thing that interests me is what a ghost artist is - I've heard of ghost writers and, in history, of art students creating a piece that's in the end signed by the master artist they studied under.

Do you recieve a sketch or layout from the oher artist to complete, or work entirely alone in the other artist's style?

SpaciousInterior In reply to Teq-Uila [2010-03-31 04:13:38 +0000 UTC]

A ghost is just another way of saying "grunt labor" I was doing lots of backgrounds, layouts, and other various undesired jobs under contracted artists for a few years at both Marvel and DC after the Kubert school. But I didn't really get into watercolors until I went back to college. After that I just did some licensing stuff; and really, I haven't published in about a year or two. I've submitted a few paintings here and their but they don;t seem to be catching the right eyes. I was sure the Joker and the Penance peices would get me more work. All I really want is cover/poster work. I have a regular job so it's really just me persuing a passion.

Thank you very much for taking the time to explain!

I think it's great, and inspiring, that you pursue that passion in addition to having studied and working. Your works are simply great.

I myself adore art, but have no formal education on the matter - with university as a priority, my best hope would be to work for free or something on such layouts or backgrounds. I oddly tend to enjoy grunt work.

I'm absolutely certain that your talent can't be ignored for long, so I really hope to see a cover from you at one point!

Your welcome! If you dont mind me asking, how do you go about getting work for DC? I mean how did you get discovered?

SpaciousInterior In reply to theharmine [2010-03-31 04:30:11 +0000 UTC]

I was a student at the Joe Kubert School and one of my teachers knew I was planning on leaving to persue my Masters degree. before I left he asked if I would be willing to do.... what amounts to really lousy grunt-work for almost no pay but at least my foot would be in the door. Me being young and stupid, I jumped all over it.

Having been told enough to realize my anatomy and design were far better than my story-telling, I ended up in lisencing and really loved it, but it wasn't getting me my Masters any faster. So I went back home and discovered watercolors. Once the paints were in play, there were a few more doors open to me with both companies and I did well for about a year, but then the only thing anybody wanted were digital paintings. That's not me. I prefer a brush to a mouse. I guess I'm a bit oldschool, but the good news is... it means I can actually take commissions as opposed to half the comic "artists" out there who just print out their photoshop files. Go me.

Not sure if you live anywhere near Virginia, but I'll be at the Roanoke Valley Comicon this Saturday (April 3rd). If you're around, come out and see me. I sell prints origionals, commissions, and do demos on site. The last show I did some kid showed me his pencils of Scarecrow (from Batman) for a critique. He was, like... 14, so I used his piece as a demo for "fixing anatomy" and when I was done I inked it for him and signed my name below his. It was great. Lee Weeks and Mike Wieringo both hooked me up like that when I was a kid so I try to do stuff like that too for any kid who really loves the art. But over 18... there on their own. lol

As far as getting more work from the big two... these days I've been out of the game long enough that I have to submit porfolios for reveiw just like everybody else. But it's all good. I have a great job, so now I'm just persuing a passion.

Wow dude thats quite a story there! Good for you, not many can say they've actually worked for the big two. Things would be alot more difficult for me haha Im not even from the USA, I live in Australia but anything is worth a try. Im not looking at applying for anything yet, I want to study and become as close to perfect as I can be as it lessens the knock backs, though I'm sure there'll be plenty.
What do you suggest for someone like me who lives abroad? Say if I decide to attend a convention and submit my portfolio, would they look at me for work?

SpaciousInterior In reply to theharmine [2010-04-02 03:54:04 +0000 UTC]

Well... there is quite alot to think about, really. Enough so in fact that I'd be willing to do some formal critiques for you as long as you're willing to take solid criticism. for most people, that's the hardest part is hearing the truth. If you'd like to try that, just send me the links to the pieces you feel are your best and we can go from there.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

theharmine In reply to SpaciousInterior [2010-04-02 04:24:33 +0000 UTC]

Yeah of course I completely understand. The fact is that truth can sometimes hurt but if you dont listen to it then youll never know what to work on but please critique as you may The one I completed most recently is this picture which was done with copics then digitally touched up. Id love to hear what you have to say about it

BRILLIANT...
I think the best pictures of the Joker are the ones that make you ask "Did Batman just kick his ass, or did he do this to himself"...
so I have to ask "did he just do this to himself ?" ...cause in your picture he looks sick enough to have done this himself...
again... BRILLIANT...

I hope so. I trust Batman to slap him around good and plenty... but I think his jaw is coming off completely. Joker's good like that.

Very Welcome! I like Villains over Super heros any-day! They don't get enough credit for their roles, which are the most important. No Villains= No Super Heros, most defiantly not the other way around!
