Princess Koriand'r of Tamaran, known as Starfire, had always been a fierce warrior. Her world was embroiled in a brutal war against the Citadel, a tyrannical empire that sought to conquer and enslave her people. After enduring torture and experimentation at the hands of her enemies, she seized an opportunity to escape. Stealing a spacecraft, she fled, not knowing where her journey would take her.

The craft's navigation systems, damaged during her escape, malfunctioned, and Starfire crash-landed on Earth. Dazed but unbroken, she emerged from the wreckage in the midst of Jump City. Her arrival did not go unnoticed. The energy surge from her ship drew the attention of the young heroes known as the Teen Titans.

Robin, the team's leader, was first to arrive on the scene. He found Starfire disoriented but defiant, her hands glowing with the power of her starbolts. Seeing her as a potential threat, he called for backup. Soon, the rest of the Titans—Cyborg, Raven, Beast Boy, and a newly-joined Terra—were at his side, ready to confront the mysterious alien.
