Description This sketch of Shinobu and Inaba from Rumiko Takahashi's (hilarious and absolutely wonderful) manga Urusei Yatsura is for (the equally wonderful)

I feel that I was done a huge favor when I was asked (after having begged to be given requests) to draw Inaba. I could not help but to throw in Shinobu too because she is one of my favorite Urusei Yatsura characters – although it is difficult (if not impossible) to settle for one favorite. I made a couple of sketches, partly because it was a lot of fun and partly because I could not really get Inaba to look any good. I really wanted to make a full body portrait but in that first case (the top part of this picture) I drew him too small to even be able to work out the face and every single one of my other tries did not show much else other than the face. Neither could I decide if I wanted to draw Inaba more boyish or grown up. In my opinion, he has a longer and manlier face than many other Takahashi boys but at the same time there is something gullible and sweet about him.

It is funny that the tiny Shinobu at the bottom is about to be drenched in tea not only by the eager little fellow rushing at her but from the big cup above her too I could have positioned them a little better.

... I know that you have been feeling a bit (that must be the understatement of the year) down lately. Although we have only spoken briefly I have always been very touched by your caring nature. You seem to be the kind of person to spread joy around you. Somehow I feel that it would be out of place for a stranger like me to try say anything to cheer you up (and I know you have not asked for people to pity you). I cannot even close to understand. I just want to get it out there that I feel for you. I wish I could have spontaneously given you this sketch at least. Now it is just a delayed request. If you are not entirely happy with it, it will be my pleasure to give it another shot.

And so, on that awkward note I wish to end this artist's note and I hope I did not write anything insulting or crossed any lines.

Oh my goodness, this illustration is hundreds of times more beautiful than I ever expected!!

You even drew her sniffing one of the flowers that he had given her at the end of the Destiny Bureau advancement course. What I'd also like to point out about this magnificent piece is that you drew Inaba the way he's meant to be drawn in the top half; innocent, shy, and hopeful. You even still made him appear boyish and masculine despite his silly uniform. And the fact he's opening the door to Shinobu illustrates a sweet symbolism of her being his future. You've captured his many kind qualities, such as being pensive, sweet, caring, and clumsy. This proves you know the characters well and that you put a lot of effort (to my gratitude ^_^) into creating moments between them and truly making them memorable. That is also a darn good door!!

This has really entirely brought me some sunshine in a dreary stressful time for me, you've no idea, I thank you tons and tons for this special incredible demonstration of your talents!!

Also, I really do appreciate the fact that you've taken the characters and moments and really made them your own. I've seen many different pieces of Takahashi fanart where the artists usually copy the style directly from the anime to a T.

This has your unique qualities about it, and the touches of detail like on Shinobu's ears, Inaba's hair, shadows, etc. really makes this sketch pop out and bring about what the characters are feeling to the viewers. One of the reasons I admire Inaba kun so much is that he does everything with his heart 100% into it. He is a person that likes to freely give to others. And he is probably the only character that is truly, genuinely in love with the object of his affections and would risk his life for Shinobu, and I agree, he does come off more masculine somehow facially in the manga. Especially the image in my signature on the forum, very solemn look on his face there

Thank you also so much for the kind words, I had been sort of coasting through life carrying many burdens with me, and helping others and keeping myself busy was what kept me through. Sometimes after a while, things come back to test me it seems, but again, I'm very glad that I have friends like you that have comfort to give, even if you feel like your words are small, the fact you are thinking of me brings me endless joy.

Thanks so much again my dear Sweswe! "A kind heart is a fountain of gladness, making everything in its vicinity freshen into smiles."

Oh my! I would never have expected such a thoughtful and long comment I am so happy that it is to your liking. I really agree with you about Inaba and I would love to start writing about why I love him so much but I am quite sure I would end up repeating what you already pin-pointed although I doubt I can articulate just what makes him so sweet the way you can.

With Urusei Yatsura I sometimes feel that the characters originate from extremes (like caricatures). It is usually something that result in characters turning out to be nothing but flat stereotypes but in this case I feel that it makes every character stand out in a crowd one might easily drown in. Maybe I should add, the characters are anything but flat and stereotypical and the more one gets to explore their world the more the water clears and the depth becomes visible. Even if Inaba showed up pretty close to the end I feel that he possesses enough qualities for it to be difficult to hope to sum it up with one picture. I love his humbleness and clumsiness just as much as his unrestrained openheartedness.

Oh, but now I am rambling. I think what I wanted to say was that I did give it a lot of thought and I am sad that I have not read Urusei Yatsura enough times to have a natural feel for the characters. I wish I knew them better. I am so hopeless at symbolism too I should not even give it an attempt. Not that this try was neither subtle nor very advanced but it all came very spontaneously while I was drawing and I am happy it came across. I guess it is what has made the deepest impression on me while I read about Shinobu and Inaba (tea, fate and flowers to keep it simple and what they all mean to the two of them).

I cannot believe I was praised about the door! I have been fretting so much about it I cannot draw a straight line to save my life. There are also lots of problems like that the top right part of the frame magically disappearing, and although there is a keyhole there is no lock on the side and the angle of the bottom of the door does not meet with the threshold etc. I really must stop being sloppy with my sketches I'm really not good at details at all. That being said, I am still as happy as can be for the praise

You wrote so many nice things I do not want to ruin it by going on and on about why I do not deserve this or that. I want to give you my deepest thanks m(___)m
And I still cannot find the words to convey just how much I hope that a silver lining will appear for you soon! Thank you for your words of wisdom, the many compliments and for writing a comment I do not know how many times I have been rereading before the rosy shimmer in my mind settled down enough for me to be able to write a reply.
