Great work!
I like how you've captured the different personalities by the body language

The original team was gone - permanently destroyed by some unexplained event *, and they had to be reinvented from scratch. That explains their different appearance. Apparently this was after the Crisis on Infinite Earths, Zero Hour....and everything before 1986 or so never happened.
Another Metal Man who app. never existed in current DC history, was "Nameless" the tin girlfriend of the weak but brilliant Tin built in #13. She inexpliacably dropped out of sight in #33 (1968) and her disappearance was not explained until 1982 (B & B 187). It was not to bring her back, but to destroy her forever.
* Due to DC's current constant changing of continuity -not only history, but motivations, sexual orientation and alignment of characters, one theorist surmised that the Metal Men were permanently destroyed by the Plutonium Man in #47. His hellish radiation cooked their responsiometers, and Doc, due to necessary medications, was unable to re-invent them. He finally did so,created a new team with the same names.

They were built to fight a flying atomic monster -oddly, NOBODY thought of calling the JLA or JSA or whoever. It was "Let's call on Doc Magnus, the man who makes science fiction ideas practical !" and thus the Metal Men were forged out of fire and smoke ! Not born, but BUILT. they were ALL destroyed, but they had won ! It was meant to be a 1-shot, but they quickly gathered a cult following.
It was only later, that they were annexed to the DC continuity.
Around 1990 or so, they had been dismantled and scrapped, and then recreated or replaced. DC never gave an explanation.
