From "5 Centimeters Per Second," founded by the amazing Makoto Shinkai...supposedly the next Miyazaki. If you ask me, this guy has already surpassed Miyazaki.The movie is about a love story between the two main protagonists Takaki and Akari. Comprised of three mini OVAs, each astoundingly different, tells the story from when they were in their childhood and progresses to the harsh reality of the real world. It is this harsh reality, that causes their "love" to be separated. Akari moves forward with her life, while Takaki can not seem to let her go.
The animation in this film is gorgeous and to die for.

I've heard that this movie is pretty depressing. How can it be on the same level when Miyazaki is so uplifting.

It is depressing, but I meant that they are similar in terms of artistic skills.

I just watched it myself. It's painful to watch, but it's painfully beautiful. Not to sound emo, but it's so realistic, and the sadness of it will get you, but it is beautiful in the true sense of a masterpiece. In visuals, soundtrack (also gorgeous), and storytelling, it is masterfully executed. It may be sad, but I doubt you will regret watching it. If you reflect on it, you might get more out of 5 centimeters per second than most miyazaki you've watched.
That being said, miyazaki is great.
Nice screenshot though. I'm having a hard time finding good wallpapers in widescreen of this show. Guess screencaps are the way to go.

I don't know I generally get a lot more out of happy endings. Especially good ones. There's a lot more to learn from a happy ending done well than just another sad ending. As far as writing goes, it's tougher to do the former well than it is to do the latter.
