I finally took the D70 out for a spin to the skating rink and while Im still bonding with it, I think Im going to like the lil sucker. This is my "cousin" of sorts, cutest little thing although you cant really tell, but she was swinging by on her way around. Enjoy.
Updated 7/3/05: Chris Weeks (+cweeks ) saw more potential in this photograph than I had initially seen, and on his own time, downloaded, worked with it, and sent me a copy of how this photo could really shine by increasing the levels. He left me with the charge to see what I could do with it, and this is as far as I've gotten to matching the result of his expertise, but I swear, Im trying! lol I'll have to put in my application to have him give me a levels tutorial, but until then, enjoy.

that really is a good photo, not often you see a panning shot with such color and vibrancy. I am really glad you got the DD, this one deserves it.

Ahh this wouldn't happen to have been taken during an all girls skate... would it? I know that's a wierd question but I work at a skating rink when I'm home from school and when we have an all girls skate the guys stand around the side of the floor and slap the girls' hands and the other way around for the guys skate. It sounds cheesy yes and I don't know who came up with it but they have been doing it at our rink since the beginning of time. ANYWAYS, this is a great picture! +cweeks is right, the movement in this piece is great! I think if you would have "frozen" everything in place by using a faster shutter speed or whatever, it would have lost all of its energy. That and the colors look amazing! I am always trying to take pictures at our rink for our website and they turn out ok but I always end up having to do some major photoshop work on them just to get the colors to look decent... probably because the lighting at skating rinks is just not made for taking pictures lol But anyways, I agree with +cweeks on picking this for a dd and congrats to you for receiving it!

*pricks ears* LOL it was during an all girl skate! They had a competition before it, girls v. guys, to "Wipe Out" (music goes off and everyone hits the floor, last one moving is a point for the other team). the boys won, so they got their skate first and this was during the girls skate *highly entertained* By Laura Laura, dont go away thinking this is the original shot - I did have to do a small amount of level raising primarily to bring out the light on her face.
Actually, while i'm at it, do you have any of your skating shots somewhere in your gallery or scraps? I want to see what you've done

oh I just love it! It reminds my a bit of my Dance and Rumors imges which were completely spontaneous shots too! I love finding something even slightly familiar in another artist! This is just a great capture and deserves the DD you received!

Now you've gotten me all interested in this levels business. ^__^ I like the picture, though. It does look very whimsical.... I was watching Fairly Odd Parents with my ten year old cousin... there's this big macho commando fairy who ran around shouting, "Fear my whimsy!" While riding on a pogo stick. Erm. I guiess you had to be there.

LOL I've seen my fair share of Fairly Odd Parents so I can just imagine that episode, though I cant say I've seen it. Oh man, poor cousin emily, whimsiling all over the place.
Playing around with levels is an interesting business, let me tell ya. I haven't read the manual to know how I can tame it to my every wanton desire, but just play around with it. I got my feel for it working at a dental office scanning in radiographs and then having to adjust the levels so the doctor could see the bone levels better. Tell me how you find it

I saw the stuffing in my nose when I had a bone spur removed... it was poking me in the brain, so they cut it out, and stuffed my nasal cavity full of cotton. I was having complications with some dizziness afterwards, so they took an xray and showed me just how much cotton they had crammed up there. I laughed... it was really gross.

I don't know! I just started getting really bad nose bleeds and headaches and they took an xray and said, "Oh, gee, it looks like your skull has an excess buildup of calcium poking into your brain. We're gonna have to cut that out." @__@ *faints*
