Description  There are some requests you can't say no to - and this was one of them.

For about five years now, I've been a member of a charity brass band, called 'Boobs and Brass.' This band, made up of a wonderful group of ladies from all over the UK (and some few from further afield too!), was set up over ten years ago to raise funds for Breast Cancer research charities. To date, they've raised over £200,000 - but why stop there?

Well, unfortunately some things can't last forever. For a whole variety of reasons - dwindling audiences, personal commitments, and others - the band 'Boobs and Brass' is coming to an end. This drawing was requested as a gift for the founder of the group.

Even so - we're not giving up just yet. There's still one final concert to come in November 2018, and in the time remaining before that date, the band have set a goal. To bring the final total raised from just over £200,000 all the way to a magical quarter of a million pounds.

If you feel you an help - either by donating, or simply by spreading the word: The donation page is here!

If that's not your thing, LadyLincoln and LiliWrites both have events on this month which are closely connected with the sentiments behind this drawing.

LadyLincoln is working hard behind Lung Cancer Awareness Month:

Lung Cancer Awareness: Searching for the LightEvery year, we strive to find new opportunities make a difference! At: LungCancer-Awareness we hope to host a wonderful community project to uplift and inspire those around us. Each day, we hope to express understanding, love and hope for those fighting. It is not always easy to find our courage when facing the unknown – but we are all united here to help those facing this battle know that they are not alone. Those fighting against lung cancer (or any other cancers,) may have several unanswered questions and fears. No one taking this journey should ever have to face this ongoing battle alone, and this is where we come in: to show our love, support and to hopefully promote awareness.
LungCancer-Awareness: Guiding Light, Guiding Hope

For those not familiar with this group and its purpose, we shall delve into that right now. Our group was created to bring awareness to a well-known ca

And to discover more of the hidden stories of shining lights in the world like the people behind this brass band, or to highlight your own stories of such special moments, LiliWrites is running a contest with the theme 'Helpers' to showcase the good that often gets lost behind all the bad news:

Birthday Contest: Helpers
I hope you've all had your fill of ghouls and ghosts! I'm quite close to completing my 30th revolution around the sun! My birthday is November 18th, and this here journal is the announcement of my annual birthday contest!
This year's theme is a bit different from my usual fare. I like to hear about your inner workings, but with how crazy/depressing 2017 has been I think we could all do with taking a look outside ourselves and examining bits of the world that aren't getting much attention. For that reason, this year's contest is open to more than just literature. Read on for more details!
Theme
Terror attacks, White Supremacists marching, earthquakes, hurricanes, shootings, bombs killing civilians, famine, refugees, and all the other terrible things you can think of have dominated the news cycle this year. But amongst all the death, fear, and pain there are definitely always people helping, and their story deserves to be told, too.

Haha, "Boobs and Brass", what a great name for a band. Definitely attracts attention. What did/do you play?

This looks like a Besson Sovereign cornet, based on the triggers. I fix musical instruments for a living, and being based in Europe I am very familiar with the Besson brand, and wow you have done an excellent job on getting all the little details. I'm guessing this was drawn from a reference photo of some kind? I'm super impressed by those reflections, especially on the bell and mouthpiece (all that complex geometry!). Major props for drawing all those notes too so many notes; I've had to hand-write sheet music before, and I will choose music-writing software over doing that again any day. The only quibble I have with it is I feel like there should be some stronger shadows underneath the cornet to make it stand out more against the background, but for all I know your reference photos might have been super well-lit and this is a true-to-life reproduction right down to the lighting.

Thank you for your comment! I play tuba, though I've not played much for the last year or so - taking time out from rehearsals/concerts to do something else.

I think it is indeed a Besson Sovereign! I borrowed one from my local band, and staged it all up with a real ribbon so I could get the reflections and the colours looking right. Do you play at all?

I must admit I skipped over a few bars or notes once or twice, where things got a bit too scrunched up. It was probably the most time-consuming part of the drawing though.

My reference photo was quite well lit, but that's not necessarily an excuse. Art gives that chance to fix that sort of thing over reality after all, (like I did with the darker reflections on the bell) so that's very valid feedback. Here it is, with temporary stand-in music:

Extra props if you can figure out the tune!

I feel like I should be able to ID the music, but I'm drawing a blank on it and probably should use my free time for things other than transcribing the visible bits into Musescore or Notion so I can hear it played back.

I can play chromatic scales on most common wind instruments because I have to be able to play-test things that I've fixed to make sure they're working properly. But for playing playing, right now my two mains are French horn in a concert band and trombone in a jazz band, though my first instrument was flute (which I really ought to practice more).

Haha, they were each chosen for a reason - pieces the band have played recently, or pieces particularly characteristic of the group.
Here they are if you wanted a listen.

That's pretty neat though, and a great skill to have. French horn is possibly my favourite orchestral instrument - those fanfares, but without the squark of the bugles!

Thanks!
Metal's not actually that bad when you've got a good lighting reference, and I actually went out and borrowed a cornet and bought a bit of ribbon to set up a whole load of references for this one.

If the donation thing is still open when my bill goes through, I'm still making a donation.
I lost half my family to cancer.
Not breast, but still.
Keep me updated on how long I can donate for this one?

As far as I know it'll be around for nearly year. The final concert is in October 2018, so I expect they won't close any windows until November (or if they do I'll try and keep the link updated for whatever replaces this).

I had to triple check what I'd written there too
As far as I understand it, the band is not taking on any new commitments, but still honouring any that had been booked by the time the decision to end was made - hence the long wind-down.

Oh. My. God. You did all those notes and lettering, even! Not to cheapen your previous, gorgeous work, but you just may have outdone yourself in this one...!
