Description

So like I said to the two people who aren't protesting the watch feed, I originally wrote this as a vicious rant, but it turns out I was redirecting anger from a RL thing.  rrr.

But still.  These are annoying as hell.  If you see someone doing this junk, send them this.  It may be their only chance of salvation.

SIN #8 INCORRECT FLIGHT FEATHER STACKING

There are few things that can be said with absolute confidence that are true of all birds, but this is one of them: the flight feathers always stack the same way.

This can be confusing to remember, so keep a hand of cards next to you while you draw:

SIN #7 NO FEATHER GROUPS

I'm so sick of seeing these homogenous walls of crap.

Feathers stack in a predictable, orderly manner, so just take thirty seconds and learn it.  If the phrase "dorsal median primary coverts" scares you pantsless, IGNORE THE FANCY NAMES!  You have my permission.

This is grossly oversimplified, but if everyone knew just this much, it would sure save me a lot of trips to the cardiologist.

See the bottom of my hit tutorial for information about how these groups look when folded.

SIN #6 BREAKING THE WRISTS

big sin BIIIIIIG SIN and I see it all the time.  Wings can't hold this pose.  It looks like you steamrolled them into place because you don't know what else to do.

Let me tell you a story about wrists.  Wrist bones are called carpals, the little clusterfuck of pebble-looking things no one wants to learn how to draw.  Humans have eight of them.  Birds have two.

TWO.  Literally A QUARTER of the wrist bones you have.  They are not nearly as flexible as your wrist.  Go easy on them.

So how do you draw that pose without breaking the wrists?  Draw the side of the wing:

I put together a reference pack of my own photos here . So no one has any excuses for not being able to find refs.

SIN #5  THE MYSTERY OF THE MISSING PATAGIUM

Again, there are few things that are consistent across all kinds of wings for all birds.  But this is another.

Three membranes made of skin surround the wing.  This is not optional.  Even if you're drawing fantasy.

These structures are absolutely critical for flight.  I don't want to bog everyone down with detail here, but... seriously. seriously important.

SIN #4 WINGS IN STUPID PLACES

Waist wings , butt wings, ankle wings, EAR WINGS, bellybutton wings, what will they think of next?

I guess I can't make a reasonable argument here, because artists who use these obviously cannot be reasoned with in the first place.

SIN #3 WING PALSY

Winged humanoids can apparently never do anything with their wings except HOLD THEM OUTSTRETCHED IN EVERY SITUATION

The cause of this?  Most likely artists being too lazy to look up how wings fold.  It's not that easy to learn, but you might wanna, unless you want your characters sitting around like

There are ways to fix this.  Find one.  I did .  You can even rip off my idea if you want, just stop drawing angels sitting around like

SIN #2 TRIANGLE WINGS

This demonstrates a lack of attempt at anything whatsoever.

Just... start over.

SIN #1 FEATHERS THAT DO NOT LOOK LIKE FEATHERS AT ALL

This is disappointing to behold... artists who spent a lot of time on a piece, except they made a typo when Googling for references.

I have put together this list of common erroneous searches to help you avoid them.

If anyone wants further examples from my List of Things Which Are Not Feathers, you can check out my collection.

---
And finally, I would like to end this post by featuring some artists I'm following who demonstrate exemplary wingmanship.

---

whispers now would everyone please stop drawing wings which make my eyes hemorrhage thank

So about the wings in weird places. where is a location that isn't weird? the humans scapula? because that wouldn't work either. there's not enough space on a single set of scapula for both wings and arms. plus, if the wings are on the scapula, the angel/demon/whatever would have to flap their arms with their wings.

You can kinda elongate the torso a touch, add another shoulder blade below and then either put the wings on the bottom or top set of shoulder blade. Of course it'll still need a bit of tweaking and suspension of disbelief.
Some takes on this:

The next ones are dragons but the same question of "Where and how does one attach the wings" is still really important and the solution is much the same in both: add limb connections-in this case shoulder blades-,add limbs, figure out the muscles and how they are that light by tweaking everything until it looks okay and is somewhat accurate or, if you can do so, make sure that the wing loading works out by calculating the wing area and approximating the weight from other creatures of a similar size and body plan.
This is all much easier in small creatures (cube-square-law and the fact that there are more small creatures than really big ones, making it easier to get a good idea of the weight) but it is probably a good idea to make the test anyways as it can also tell you a lot about how you creature flies.

All of my issues with how people fail at drawing wings is summarized in this post perfectly

Have you encountered this one: beautifully rendered piece with accurate human anatomy and form; wings might as well be giant amorphous feather dusters, if even that. Noooooooooo

yeS I DON'T GET IT

like clearly they're not lazy if they got that far with human anatomy (and probably also form, color, composition) but DOESN'T EVEN TRY when it comes to the wings

"well no one really knows what feathers look like! its not like their real lol"

It's infuriating, for sure. I mean, they could at least copy a picture if they're really that clueless. It would be better than the wing monstrosities that end up happening

I know you hate wings in dumb places, but I have to grandfather clause them in: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hermes Sorry! But I won't make them flap if that makes you feel better.

You have no idea how long I've been looking for good references for realistic wings.  When I found this there may have been a tear of joy...the laughs came soon afterward.  Thanks

I'm glad this could be of use! Yeah, it's way too difficult to find good wing anatomy refs, so I'm trying to fill in the gaps where I can.

Oh man, feather stacking is my nemesis. I always need a reference, because memorizing is not an option. My problems with left vs right strike yet again.

(And you gave me a mini heart attack with the mention, ahahaha.)

OhBandera [2014-10-23 02:31:58 +0000 UTC]

Good lord, I need to start drawing wings again; I tried the other day and forgot how to stack the feathers. e.e

Though, it was the weirdest thing today, I saw one of those goofy plastic toy birds that generally don't pay attention to wing anatomy what so ever- and it had all of the feather groups- even the alula- and the feather stacking correct right down to the very detail. The wings were so well-molded that I wanted to slip it into my pocket for later reference. xD (But I didn't, because stealing is no bueno.)

it's less weird than you think... my summer job was unwrapping christmas ornaments nonstop and you can bet your butterflies I judged every "angel" I found.  The worst part is, most of them were REALLY well done.  Like, reasonable scale, correct anatomy, everything.  A lot of them were stupid (the ones with contour feathers glued in place of flight feathers were my special favorites) but like... 9 times out of 10 the kitsch ass angel looked better than any given angel drawn by an artist. :l

but judging this next to how many people read my actual rants............. I have little incentive to continue being nice

By the way, are you doing nanowrimo?

shota In reply to squidlifecrisis [2014-10-23 01:46:46 +0000 UTC]

No, sadly I do not. As much as I'd like to have the kind if commitment for that sort of thing, my current job saps me of just about any spare time I get. I was lucky to do a lot of my showcasing in college, but that was a while now and most of it is done in the rare idle times I stumble upon. I'd be a major disappointment if I joined a writing committee, but I do sometimes do collaborative things with my friends.

Rants are healthy by the way. They get whatever it is that's grating on you out there. No sense bottling that crap in. Besides, I like harsh truths. Too many people sugarcoat nowadays.

ah, I see

Usually I dump all my grievances on my poor bff, but ones like this don't do it for me unless I actually aim them at those who deserve it.

Now I feel guilty for NOT posting the first draft.  This isn't nearly incendiary enough to be worth sharing...

Well, spill your guts for all the world to see -- those who don't fancy a glimpse can carry themselves elsewhere. I'll read it, trust me.

But, I'm a lot like you; my poor girlfriend gets to hear it all and a lot of the times she has no idea what I'm going on about, but it's the fact that she listens so well either way that I wholeheartedly appreciate it. She's a trooper, let me tell you.

You know what would make a good sin? A good but terribly oh-I-want-one sin? An angel based on a Silky Chicken.

As a person who likes to try and reference real birds, I find it illogical but I want a silky chicken 'birdman' or angel to exist, or a fancy pidgeon one: Because honestly I find it fascinating, and am absolutely using one of my more birdy characters as an experiment subject on occasion to create the human versions of these insane birds:

I imagine them being like the 'fashion models' of the bird world, unhealthily skin/weird looking but everyone loves them |D

are you kidding me, who could resist chicken angels?  The first angel character I made has dark brahma rooster wings.  And I have another based on a turkey.

Though unfortunately it takes a lot of selective breeding to get to wild feathers like that.  Or maybe a feather perm, ahahaha.

Falconicide In reply to squidlifecrisis [2014-10-22 23:44:03 +0000 UTC]

Perfect! I can just imagine a bunch of angel's at the hairdressers getting feather perms now, not to mention the selective breeding idea makes me think of higher class angels now as all these fancy looking birdguys and gals what with them being the 'elite' and such.

(Unlike my scruffy boy Ekket who is currently the source of many a musing on chicken and fancy angels/humanoids. I'm planning to finish up a bunch of drawings of him with different 'bird' influences, since originally had his birdy-ness based on more predatory birds, but chicken angels is a must.)

I love this, I do admit wings are a bit hard for me to draw, I am guilty of some of these sins, I do  look references of real bird wings (not drawings of  someone others wings)  and still have a hard time making look real.  I love the humor that's written in this, educational and funny.

others' drawings aren't always bad--the reason we use diagrams is to clarify structures that can be difficult to understand on the real thing.  Once you can identify the structures from a diagram, the real model makes a lot more sense!

Admittedly, the Google Image part cracked me up so hard IRL.
I thought it would end. But It kept getting better.

I laugh because one of my favorite compositions was executed so painfully wrong.
And it's the most blobby christmas tree wing the world has ever seen.
Tragically beautiful.
I really wonder why people even faved this thing.
