I find it interesting that they state very early on in the series that Gems donβt age, but in the flashbacks they always seems so much βyoungerβ. Amethyst is kid and Garnet and Pearl appear to be in their 20s. In the current show, Amethyst is a teenager and Garnet and Pearl appear to be in their 30s.

Little Amethyst is so adorable, she was even adorable in the episode

I keep wondering why they look like that... If gems don't age then what would that be? do they stop after some time? if so why were they present in the 18th century fully grown only to look younger in the 80's? Does regeneration effect their age as well as their appearance? could they change their age while regenerating?
So many questions...
Doesn't matter that much though, I really love the young gems design... XD

my theory is that its just as old as they feel. they where technically younger back then, so they felt younger and therefore looked younger. like steven did in so many birthdays. as for the "old timey picture" i have no explanation besides continuity issues. and considering that this is pretty much the only continuity issue on the show thus far that is relatively noticeable, I wont give the creators to much grief over it
