Did I already mention we're getting a new Les Mis in Finland next year?Did I already mention that the Finnish translation is hideous? It does everything all wrong: Grantaire is afraid of death, Valjean tells God what to do, Fantine talks about losing her virginity, Cosette straight tells Marius to shut up, Javert's Suicide is a love letter to JVJ and JVJ tells Enjolras he will "do the spy"... It's inaccurate, hard to understand, unintentionally funny and it ships Stars/Bread like there's no tomorrow.
In short, sounds like it's the time for a new translation, right? Show your support, sign the petition for a new Finnish translation at here , English instructions included (let me know if you can't find your country in the list).
With your help, we might get a new translation. Finnish 2013 Les Mis: now with 100% less spy-doing?

Were it only the J/JVJ shipping wrong with the translation, maybe then it could be kept... But it's so filled with silly lines overall, it's not funny anymore.

Nah, the Finnish version of the book is okay, actually - the musical's translated libretto is awful. But yeah, I've heard the quality of the English translations varies, when it comes to the book. I've got the Julie Rose version - wonder if that's any good...

Ahh, I see! Well, I heard the Julie Rose edition is easier for modern audiences to understand, probably the easiest of the English translations. I have the Norman Denny version, which I heard flows well also, probably second to Rose's as far as "for modern audiences" goes!

Yep. I only remember one bit by heart: "My head is dizzy - that man causes it" (A translation for "And my thoughts fly apart, can that man be believed"...) - but the rest is not much better, believe me. Can't but wish the petition is effective.

It's been about a couple months now - what sort of chance do you think there is that the petition will actually have an effect, by the way?
(I just had to come back and chuckle/grin over this after ~ThreshTheSky mentioned it again.)

Hmm. Not very good, to be honest.
I sent it to the theatre manager and the director of the show in the beginning of June. The director is not Finnish, so he basically replied "someone else's problem", but the manager promised to look into the matter. Still, I'm not very hopeful. They'll transport the Γ
ST version's director + the whole creative team to this theatre, and the manager has said it'll be "very similar" to the Γ
ST production. It seems they're doing something of an Γ
ST replica, and that's just painfully lazy in a small country like Finland. 80% of the people who care saw the Γ
ST version already. So I'd be rather surprised if they actually started caring about an aspect like the translation - since they don't seem to care enough to look for a fresh approach to the show itself.
Still, won't give up hope just yet. Maybe someone will at least read the existing libretto and fix some of the stupidest mistakes.
But hey, glad the picture still amuses!

I'm afraid it can't be found anywhere else but as the subtitles of the 25th Ann. DVD Nordic release. I'd transcribe it for you - but I don't have the DVD myself. Sorry! :/
