Important illustration that have to be included in any Silmarillion image marathon. Key part of Fëanor's character, beside the fire and crafting.

This is beautiful. I love the fiery light of Laurelin and the candlesticks and the gauzy fabric to the right and Miriel's hair and the yellow cloak and most specially Miriel's peaceful face. Feanor looks so heartbroken as well. You've done a really great job on the light, it suits the time of day perfectly, and not many artists can do that!

In the Silmarillion there is a lot like that and I don't understand why other artists stubbornly draw on the same subjects.

Feanor is one of my favourite characters and one of the greatest in the book, and I love him and his mother dearly. This art is heartbreaking.

I love almost all the female characters in the books (Slim.,LOTR),there are many tragic stories - so yes, I understand you).

your style is so elf like. I love it not like some others that make the elves seem as though they build and dress just like medieval humans did

You illustrated Feanor exactly the way I've always imagined him! Though we all know how he ended and what does his life looked like, still it's one of my beloved characters in Tolkien's creatiom.. And it's beautiful that you showed him not only as a murderer of his kin, what is the most common but also as a loving son. Amazing..

I don't know what to say but this is a great composition of content and colours. I wonder when he kind of "re-discovered" his mother. I wonder if he was too young in the early years (her fea went to Namo's halls quickly after his birth) to realize what happened. Poor Miriel.
A lot more detail than in the actual Silmarillion can be found in HoME 10 and 12.

I really was moved by this painting. Feanor comes across as a self-absorbed manipulator o and user of other people to further his desires. And yet, he never did that to his mother, or denigrated her memory. In fact, he was rather heated when Finwe married again, and he never liked his step-brothers. I suppose it is true that all sons love their mothers to some part.

I agree.Miriel`s death as if launched invisible fatal mechanism in the fate of her son.
...hmm,i re-read that sentence now and think - 'were the characters in the book who have lived a happy and not tragic life'?

Zeonista In reply to steamey [2013-09-09 19:42:44 +0000 UTC]
I'm sure there were some, but the heroes & heroines of the Elder Days were not the sort to avoid events that might lead to tragedy. They took life as it came, for better or worse, with regrets as necessary. (I thought the ELves in LOTR very 200% wiser than all us mere mortals, but after reading the stories of earlier ages I realized via Tolkien they had earned that wisdom the hard way. Listen to the advice of your elders! )

Hmm...wise reasoning.
I think she was hoping for the best for her son.In any case, except for the evil he has done, he was the creator of the beautiful works of art. And in fact the best representative of its kind.
The fate of living (as I read somewhere) like the shadow of a man from the fire falls in different directions. Having made a move - we change the future and these multiple shadows are formed in one, making us just as we can not even want to be.I mean, that Feanor could stay in Valinor and just be worthy of his father. He had all the makings to become a noble lord in the blessed land. There would be no killing Teleri, the death of his sons, and all the other horrible things.
