King Dain was an old dwarf during this battle, he was 252 but hardly feeble and Brand was 62.

I'm not a hardcore fan in the fandom to find the little things like this. If you want this, sit down next to me and tells everything I didn't remember or didn't read.

Despite my love of Lord of the Rings, it has been a while since I read the books so I am afraid that I am not that knowledgeable, however I can direct you to Arachîr Galudirithon on Youtube, his lore videos are awesome, he knows a lot more than me and the videos are very informative.

Some people read The Hobbit and wonder why the heck this 'Dain Ironfoot' guy gets to rule Erebor instead of old Balin - others have already read The Appendices to LORD OF THE RINGS and can point to this particular incident (not to mention the fact that Dain Ironfoot is locked in deadly combat with Gimli, son of Gloin for the title of 'Gigantic Exception that proves the Rule' to the fact that Dwarves do not tend to be Heroes as a rule).

Yeah. Among the dwarves there are an exceptional personality! I would like to draw more stories of their history. If only an inspiration will come.

Well if you wanted to draw scenes from Dwarvish history that no-one (at least to my knowledge) has drawn before, you could try drawing up a Family of Dwarves during the Glory Days of Erebor or Khazad Dum - we've seen dwarves adventuring or at war many, many times but I don't believe that any artist has yet drawn Professor Tolkien's dwarves in the course of their everyday lives.
Alternatively you could try drawing up an incident like the argument of the Dwarves with Fram over the treasure-hoard of the mighty dragon (Scatha) whom the latter had slain - its interesting to imagine some bearded dignitary bandying words with a rugged Northman, a scene of Tolkien at his most Wagnerian (in terms of subject matter and inspiration).

You read my mind!I would like to draw something from their everyday lives. Feast, maybe. Or bivouac.
And greatly thanks for the advice about Scatha. I'll certainly think about it. By the way, how do you think Fram looked like, when he killed the dragon?

Libra1010 In reply to steamey [2014-12-07 21:55:45 +0000 UTC]
Very relieved to have killed the beast, rather than been killed by this ferocious creature!
On a more serious note I see Fram as a man from a fairly poor background - a man who runs a small herd of horses on a fairly poor pasture and therefore cannot afford to lose even one to the attentions of Scatha (for if he loses his horses he loses his living and his family starves); it is from this desperation that he finds the courage to hunt a Dragon, a quarry very few in Middle-Earth would care to confront.
It is possible that it is his relatively modest and obscure background that provokes him to impudence when the Dwarves approach him for the return of their treasure after the Dragon dies - they couldn't rouse themselves to hunt down the Beast and redeem their treasure when the Dragon was devouring horses, as well as their herdsman so what gives them the nerve to come into HIS Hall and address him as though he were profiting from holding stolen property rather than enjoying the due reward for his courage?

Hmm, interesting thoughts... By the way, i have a dispute with my friends about Scatha - was he a real worm (or something like that) or he had legs like other dragons?

Libra1010 In reply to steamey [2014-12-08 21:08:44 +0000 UTC]
I do not believe that any description of Scatha the Wyrm is explicitly mentioned anywhere in the writings of Professor Tolkien; my own mental image of the creature owes much and more to the excellent work by Master James Turner Mohan on the individual in question (which for the record has legs).
Would you like me to post a link to the image?

Why should I laugh at the work of such an excellent artist? (I might smile a little, but in sympathy and not in mockery - a good idea can occur to more than one person after all!).

One of my favorite scenes in all of fiction. To die defending a friend's body, I can't think of a better example of true friendship. This is very well detailed and the atmosphere you created fits the scene beautifully. Thank you for sharing

I don't know about brave death in battle near a friendly shoulder, but there are many other examples of true friendship...in "The Lord of the Rings" and in "The Silmarillion" too.
