One of two protagonists for my fantasy Webtoon, Project Heartifact, is Terram di Mondo. Terram is an Artificer; someone with the knowledge and ability to release the power of the Artifacts. This power is called an "Art". Arts can be a simple as creating and manipulating an element, like fire, or can be as complex as the constructing an entire city from nothing. Artifacts cannot be used by non-Artificers. Each Artifact has a enigmatic symbol etched into its surfaces known as an Artiglyph. Artiglyph is the language of the Artificers and their god, Deus, which is kept hidden from the eyes of non-Artificers, as they are seen as unworthy. To become an Artificer, you must enroll in the Artificer Academy, where tuition costs a very large sum of Artifacts. Thus Artifacts are currency in the world of Project Heartifact since gold or any other precious metal can be produced with one Artifact alone. Artifacts cannot make other Artifacts. Those with a lot of Artifacts and can pay the Academy's tuition are seen as worthy by Deus, since they must have worked hard to achieve that kind of wealth.

Enter Terram. Terram didn't work for entry into the Academy. Terram is the eldest son of the newly founded Mondo Family, the head of the Architect Signorie, a faction of the Artificer Government that specializes in architecture, urban planning, and civil engineering. Terram's father, Dontor di Mondo, was born into a family of farmers but left to start a catering business that proved entirely lucrative, enough so that Dontor entered into the Artificer Academy to make a better life for himself and his soon-to-be wife. Terram is grateful to be a Mondo, but does not desire to become an Artificer.

Terram is a gentle soul but rather shy and eccentric. Terram stays up in the night reading, experimenting, and wandering outdoors to catch bugs and sketch animals he finds in the wild. What would be called ecology or zoology in our world, is a newer concept to the world of Project Heartifact, thus Terram calls it "creature cataloguing" and he is obsessed with it. Terram even keeps a rare star turtle, one of his several pets.

Artificy has its perks but it also has its restrictions. Like life service to the Empire... Forever.

Not much time for "creature cataloguing" when a war needs to be fought.

If only there was a way for Terram to leave and pursue his dreams. If only there was something Terram could give the Empire that they would want more than his service...
