interesting piece. well done. I have not done one like that yet. I have done abstract but I have to say everything you have for display: Wow!

No problem. The style actually is inspiring to try and make my own abstract art more lively. I agree. I like both surrealism and abstract, but sometimes they are confusing.

I'm noticing alot more faces (humanoid) and birds now veiwing this upside down. Are all the figures in these intentional or just coincidence? I mean, did you paint this like an optical illusion/ puzzle with alternative "faces"?

Stepbeyond In reply to Masym [2006-02-02 05:45:48 +0000 UTC]
they don't start off intentional---but many end that way. I have to keep very aware of what's going on. In pending---the upside down version was viewed many times to keep it all together. I
It seems I love characters in my work---all sorts of characters, creatures---puzzles--and love the illussions. The illussions are best seen in regular lighting--or lower--from 6 or more feet away. It's my style---signature. As you probably know already most can be rotated for different images. If you havent seen Fish Love Dogdown---have some fun. There's about 175 characters in that including the rotations---the upside down version is real cool. Most viewers only see a smal percnt of what's gong on in them because the close up view on comp and time limitations.
So I believe my work is about illussions---characters---and puzzles. They all seem to have a message---or several depending on the viewer.

Oh wow, I heard you talking about it before, but it really doesn't prepare you for it. I bet it was a nightmare to do!
On a basic level, this obviously shows just how talented you are, to be able to do that in paint is just unbelievable.
I like the way you use symmetry, but are not bound to it. there are differences to each side. To browze through this offers a wealth of detail, but you always feel you are under scrutiny.
I don't normally like colour, but the vividness of this adds to it. Such bright colours should be calming, happy, and perhaps normally associated with toys or childrens wallpaper. But when seen here as part of a nightmare, insane composition, they're meaning is changed and it can become quite disturbing.
Good job!

you are very good Tom. There actually is good news in this--a happiness if you will---more in the Pending 2--original view. I admitt--the upside down version is captivating. I have it here in a 18X24 canvas (the original of course) in a black wood frame--the colors--the painting--has to be 100% more brilliant--the colors are rich and deep---just so much nicer to look at--so alive. I lost so much when I viewed it here--but at least so many people can look at it

Well nothing is ever the same online, but it's still great that the whole world can see just something of it. Don't you think it makes it even better that it can mean two opposing things at the same time? Happy and disturbing.

Oh the nightmare. Read some of my comments to others that commented on it.
The next one--few days--is blowing my mind. I'll explain all the details when I post it.
You haven't been producing much these days. Come on now--I'm waiting to see that talent I love.

thx--appreciated. You know--that's been the favored way with most people. Even I really like the upside down. This is the first one ever to be more faved in it's reversed form. It did take alot of thinking/work to have it come out that way--I had to think about it with every pen stroke I made the original view--it payed off I guess. I't's in a simple 18X24 black frame. The colors are awesome here--so deep--rich--sorry you guys are not seeing it that way here.

For some reason I get an image of two cats stearing into a fish tank. One's a thin wirey cat and the other ones pudgy. Fish looks kind of like an eel. Have no idea why that image pops into my head when I look at this but that's the beauty of abstracts, everyone sees something different. Great job of painting, great color sceam. That must have taken a long time to paint. I have yet to undertake a project that would take half that amount of time. Great job.

Thanks so much. I thought most of my friends knew. It was a nightmare. No details here--you should see a few posts on pending and pending 2 --took too much time--I started wrong and it continued throughtout. Happy with the finished work. Thx again--I feel like I'm falling asleep.

Pending 2 lol You got to see Fish Love Dogdown lol What a title--huh?.
Take your time---I understand. Been averaging 3 hrs a day on this after my normal work and family day---this is my middle of the night time---nuts!!
So if you haven't been on for awhile I understand the back log you must have. I don't envy you. Take it easy. What you get to you get to.

lol I won't let it happen to me. It is a real danger this thing. I don't believe for me---I started so late in life---didn't grow up with it.
Had to develope all my social skills with people. Now--the younger generation grew up with these--it's different for you guys---but---never replace real life social interaction with this---your social skills will never develope the way they should. It's not just my opinion it's a fact. This cannot replace face to face communication---it doesn't even come close to the phone.
So ur right---I don't want to turn this into my whole social life. Id toss the damn thing out the window first. lol
I have met wonderful people here, and I have formed net relationships---but the above still holds. I do speak with a few people on the phone from here---and that's awesome : )

If I every start becoming to attatched to internet I would unplug the damn thing. Although just like you said I have meet some really great people here and I have actually started an email and snail mail relationship with one of them. Quite a few of my friends on DA were my friends in real life before I got on DA. So I would not really lose to many friendships if I were to leave DA, not that is likely to happen.

heyy!!! what about me? : ( Only teasing.
I have the opposite then you. All the people I met here I didn't know before da--so that would be the hard part. I'd probably email them---stuff like that if I ever decided to leave da and they wanted to stay hooked up for mutual art related topics and the art business which I'm shooting for now. It's now or never for me at this point in my life. Many say I've got what it takes---we'll see. Much depends on who and where you market to. Doing the shows---or so many ways to market art.

haha What do you think I'm doing now? Why do u think I asked you what ur plans are with art? Networking with fellow artists---and ur one of them lol
I must start doing what I know and stop procrastinating about getting the ball rolling with the business end of art. Will keep u in the loop for sure

some of your stuff is absolutely sellable. The right market and marketing. Have you ever taken a look at what art sells out there. Different strokes for different folks. I thought the same thing not too long ago. People, including you, thought I was nuts for thinking that way--remember ? : )

369Naruto In reply to Stepbeyond [2006-05-29 20:48:48 +0000 UTC]
Yeah yeah I remember, it is always a pain when your own words come back to bite you. I guess my biggest problem is that I do not have a head for marketing or know much about business. So I will have to team up with some one that does know how to sell art and what kind of art sells.

haha In pending2--look at the main woman's face. You will quickly see the serpent face from the black mouth (with fangs) up. At the black mouth point down you can see a man with sun glasses wearing a tie. Those are the 3 main faces within the main face. Pending (upside down version) has so many cool faces etc. Enjoy--it was torture to do.

yes--it's one of those back and forth things. I know--the mind doesn's stay on one or the other 2 long. Now that your mind registered those 2 the next one will come out sooner or later. The one I'm working on now probably has 150 characters and a full 4 rotations. It is something to look at. Images will appear over weeks. The brain won't pick up certain ones till it registers the first. Something like that.
Glad you like it--have fun with these.

sometimes it does get a bit nuts. I get excited seeing all this stuff--but sometimes while working on them every damn line can change an entire section--so after a certain point it does get a little nuts.
What adds to that is being constantly aware of the views from rotations--let's face it--I can't possibly get exactly what I want on all four--but one or 2 pretty close. This next one will give you very clear images on the turns. I hope these spark your own imagination--just don't steal any of my character's lol I mean--there's so many in each drawing. If your eye hits a character that you'd love to use--please ask me first--ok? Most can work great as stand alone characters with modifications if one wants--many need little or none to be a complete stand alone character. I might do some of that--but I'm afraid if I get started I won't stop. That would take years. Geezzzz this one I'm working on now would take years if I pulled each character in it---so--I haven't gone there lol

man--thanks much. I can't tell you what a nightmare this painting was. The time--the frustration--I never worked like this on an art piece before. 3 times I thought it was a goner. It was my fault since I started it wrong and every step of the way tortured me. Every change---fix--paint---let dry--paint---not sticking---wait---change--paint---oh God--never again Matt. So--you're comment--I say--yes---I had to finish it--it was worth it---your comments mean so much---especially a hell painting like this. It was done on 18X24 canvas using almost 100 % OIL BASED PAINT PENS I'm cringing lol. It is beautiful in person. Put it in a black wood frame---gorgeous--I loose alot on net--u know that from your own work. Thx again
