Fantastic- test render.. It's this sort of work that urges me to start the process of actually making models. ย

your work is amazing, how long does the production of this take exactly? 20 hours or something?

It's hard to say exactly how long the working time is, since it was made a little bit at a time.
But I suspect it was more than 20 hours, because of all the custom textures that had to be painted.

Looks great so far, like the atmosphere in this scene.

For an atmospheric piece, I would stop here
but its not my picture.
Maybe I would add a little robot using a brighter color
palette that was used in the picture pulling a broken toy rabbit.

Yeah, the water is mondo impressive. The play of light on its surface is totally convincing.
So, Steve, how much matte work do you get to do for production, vs. straight-up concept stuff these days?

RobCaswell In reply to steve-burg [2011-01-25 15:32:44 +0000 UTC]
I wonder if it's a case of ADs telling producers and directors that "shiny" is easier, thus cheaper?
Have you ever gone onto a production as a digital modeler AND concept artist? Are many open to that, or has it already become too specialized and subcontracted?
So with your sticky tar clumps on this work, is a lot of it just a texture "tar plane" that your bringing up to poke through the recesses in the tech plating?

RobCaswell In reply to steve-burg [2011-01-25 16:29:20 +0000 UTC]
Ah. Shiny. Got ya.
I wonder how much of that is an outgrowth of the "all done in render, no postwork" fetishists. That always sounds like an excuse to me and what they're really saying is "I have modeling skills and don't know the first thing about digital painting". I mean who usually cares what it takes to get to a final image, as long as that image meets expectations/requirements.
