Description Another destination in my series of exo-planets...

The inspiration for this image is my ongoing fascination with off-shore oil platforms.

This is a 3D scene that I painted into to add a lot of the fine details (like the tiny lights, astronauts, and distant ships).

The 3D was modeled and rendered using Lightwave 3D. The textures were painted in Photoshop.

There's something about them that puts me in mind of Stephane Malka's Green Machine ideaΒ www.designboom.com/architectur…

Almost like terraforming equipment, roaming the earth doing the gritty, roughneck work of building a world...

Quite like the mood of this image, it's almost kind of a frightening memorial to industrial progress.

"Outland" definitely nailed that "oil rig in space" theme. It's actually a very underrated movie.
As far as "... meets, well, meets something really cool!" - how could I not be pleased by this comment?
A sincere "thank you" - and I hope to continue to post more cool stuff!

The pay is great but for some reason, there seems to be one less worker the next day. Management does not care since thats one less paycheck to cut. HR has sent an investigator because they are worrying that the disappearances might lead to a scandal.

What the investigator finds, well, lets just say scandal is the lesser of many evils.

Looks great.

I watched it a little while ago. It's nice to see what could be achieved using such antiquated methods as sets, miniatures, front projection, and lighting!

I guess we've moved beyond all that now... or at least not many people seem to be aware of those techniques!

RobCaswell In reply to steve-burg [2011-10-14 17:54:27 +0000 UTC]

My old "basement super-8" buddy Tony Tremblay seems to be driving his career on being one of the "masters of the old ways" - the dark arts of physical effects and camera trickery. I think that's another thing that gave "Moon" such a cool, nostalgic vibe is that it seemed to make more use of physical models than most other productions, these days. That was such a neat lil' film.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

steve-burg In reply to RobCaswell [2011-10-15 04:40:21 +0000 UTC]

Miniatures will be back - that's my prediction. There's an assumption that CG is "flawless". But a lot of the stuff really looks fake, more and more as the eye becomes attuned to the telltale artifacts of the typical CG shot.

It was once true that VFX were avoided whenever possible, due to the distinct possibility that they would not be entirely convincing. VFX sequences were carefully planned out in advance. Now it's a different story, with large portions of a movie shot against a green backing - the assumption being that the resulting footage will be "perfect" once the CG is added later.

I have come to seriously question that blind faith, particularly after some of the "epics" we've endured lately. The special effects seem interchangeable from one movie to another, and overall not as "special" as one might hope they would be. For this reason, I believe we will see a return to some of the time-proven methods used in the past. Miniatures have the advantage of being real things, photographed with real light by real cameras. When properly executed, they are very effective. Plus, they're just really cool!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

RobCaswell In reply to steve-burg [2011-10-17 18:58:44 +0000 UTC]

I think CG has its place, it's just that we seem to be in a phase where it's seen as the Swiss Army Knife of imaginative movie making, without much consideration to REAL expense or whether it will yield better results than a physical prop or model. I'm sure that varies from production to production, but it's just seemed to lead to more visually expository story telling.... perhaps in a similar way that TMP went nuts for motion controlled space effects just because they could.

I think Avatar is one of the few SF films to really explore the potential offered by CGI in SF. Of course my "holy grail" remains unrealized. Ever since reading the novel I've wanted to see a Ringworld movie, but aside doing it as cel animation, there didn't seem any practical way to pull it off... until CGI! I'd love to see the technology used to bring Puppeteers, Kzinti, Outsiders, et al, to life. AND the Ringworld itself. Now that's an SF concept worthy of the technology!

steve-burg In reply to RobCaswell [2011-10-18 05:35:49 +0000 UTC]

I agree! I'm not sure when we can expect to see something like that, as opposed to yet another "Spiderman" or Superman" reboot

On a tangent... I just noticed there's a remake of "The Thing" that has come out. I don't know anyone who's seen it, and I assume it's garbage, but one never knows...

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

RobCaswell In reply to steve-burg [2011-10-18 14:54:36 +0000 UTC]

I think the "Thing" movie is actually a prequel to Carpenter's effort, covering the initial expedition and discovery of the craft. I think I saw one review... and it was "OK"... but I haven't gone out of my way to look up more info. Life's been too busy, I guess.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

steve-burg In reply to RobCaswell [2011-10-20 14:27:56 +0000 UTC]

Hmmm... the Swedish expedition? I would go and see a Muppets version of the Thing, with the Swedish Chef as the hero...

In chasing after the "safe bet" lowest-common-denominator, it seems like movies are less and less relevant these days. I keep reading how box-office is bigger than ever - but I couldn't even tell you what's playing! I wonder how much of that "bigger than ever" box-office is due to inflated ticket prices?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

RobCaswell In reply to steve-burg [2011-10-20 18:18:32 +0000 UTC]

I always wonder that too, when I hear of a new box office record being set. They never talk "number of tix", just moolah taken in. So OF COURSE something like Avatar is going to beat out, say, Road Warrior Thirty years of inflationary pricing gives you an edge. But I suspect they use the dollar-take measure because it just gives them another marketing tool as saying "third highest grossing film of all time" makes it SOUND like "third most watched film of all time". And NO ONE wants to be the last kid on the block to see it!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

steve-burg In reply to RobCaswell [2011-10-21 05:55:29 +0000 UTC]

The whole thing about Hollywood and their "statistics" is they always look for a way to make it seem as if it's nothing but up, up, and UP!

The truth is, they're selling a LOT less tickets than 5-10 years ago. On top of that, the sales from DVDs have fallen off a cliff. Which is not a good situation for them, no matter what kind of a spin they try to put on things.

I remember that, though I can't recall the name of that planet... It was a water planet, with big platform cities in the rain.

In looking at the image, I see now it can easily look like big waves or ocean - but the terrain is really icy rock. I might need to make a slight tweak to get that to read better (There are 3 figures standing on the hill at bottom right, but they're very small)
