Description
On the first trip I made to visit the man I ended up marrying I was introduced to a LOT of his friends. Not many of them knew much about me. We went out to a bar to hang out and play some billiards. First thing they noticed about me that was a little different was the fact that I kept a sketch book on me no matter what I was doing. A flurry of questions followed. I let them browse some of my sketches while we chatted. One of the guys stopped at another cross drawing of mine. He really liked it and asked if I could draw one for him. He mentioned that it had reminded him of family. I said sure, but the only drawing implement I had on me was a ball point pen. So as he talked about his grandparents in particular I doodled. By the time he had finished talking (and his game of pool) I had drawn the cross and the banner wrapping around it. He told me names, dates, and the sentiment he wanted. This is a photograph of the sketch, torn out of my notebook and given to him right then and there. He was astounded to have watched my process. He commented that because I had drawn it in pen there was no way for me to erase and adjust if something was wrong, and applauded my 'bravery' for drawing in pen. I laughed, not sure if it was actually brave or just silly. Leave it to new friends to point out why what you do without thinking about it might be a little odd.
