Description This is a large fiddlehead of a fern we saw along a walk behind down into a cloud forest in Ecuador. It's covered in that gooey slime to protect the growing leaf from predation.

It's a giant fiddlehead (a leaf of a fern before it unravels)

And they are delicious! Growing up in Maine we ate a lot of these.

Yeah? I've never had them... what are they like?

Though I wouldn't have wanted to eat this one... it was about 6 inches across and covered in a protective slime!

They are good. Similar to pretty much every other "green" you have ate like Broccoli, and Asparagus. Ive never cooked them, only ate them lol. The slime I think washes off, or maybe you pick them after the slime falls off. I dunno.

I think this type of fern was specialized to repel herbivores... keeping in mind that this one was found deep in the cloud forests of Ecuador

I will have to try our native ferns sometime though

I dunno anything about Ecuador. Wish I did... I would love to travel. Kinda considering going to Laos eventually. Its pretty reasonable.

Traveling almost anywhere is worth it, and Laos sounds pretty interesting. You should definitely go if you get the chance.
