I probably messed up this quote so badly but I couldn’t find the scene it was from and I’m not going to watch the traumatizing first episode again… XD Seriously if you’re a fellow horse lover (let’s face it, if you’re watching me, you are XD), just skip over the first minute or two. XD It’s rated Mature for many very good reasons especially the first season. And remember that grullo/dun craze I went through in January? This piece is why. XDD This is the second in my Horses on the Screen series and I couldn’t be more thrilled that you all are enjoying this so far!

This grullo Mustang stallion is the wild horse captured and trained by one of the main characters of Yellowstone, Kayce Dutton. He remains unnamed so far in the ongoing series but he is a recurring horse. During the first season he is the notorious bucking horse that no one can seem to ride except Kayce. This (in my opinion) eventually results in one of the funniest horse-related scenes in film and show history. SPOILERS (sort of): to try to break the Mustang the wranglers decide to duct tape the new guy to the saddle and set the horse loose in the round pen. XDDD

I have to say dun horses are really fun to paint in my opinion! There are so many factors of the modifier gene and combinations of factors to think about and every dun is different! This was actually a piece I started in January, but I was really struggling with my chronic illness at the time. With ANOTHER new record for number of layers, this piece has 81 visible layers. My original goal of this was not to be in a cartoony style, but the piece took on a life of its own! This is probably my third favorite work now and I’m really proud of the lighting! AND THOSE MOUNTAINS YOU GUYS!!! My first attempt at mountains. :3

Also, this is me trying to cut down on how long my descriptions are… XDDD

Fun facts:

~ The unnamed grullo Mustang stallion is portrayed by two grullo stallions, one with a star and one without.

~ After returning to the ranch Kayce Dutton can be seen riding the grullo stallion almost every time he rides throughout the series so far (seasons 1, 2, 3, and 4).

~ Jake Ream (who plays himself as one of the wranglers) is an honest to goodness cowboy who trains cutting horses for the show’s writer, director, and producer, Taylor Sheridan (who also plays Travis). Sheridan wanted the show to display the true nature of cowboys. To do that he needed the actors to ride like cowboys. Ream coached “cowboy camp” for the actors which was a four-day trip in the mountains of Utah, USA. He taught the actors how to cowboy while they camped out, herded sheep, and cared for themselves and their horses, all while spending hours a day in the saddle. Jefferson White (who plays Jimmy Hurdstrom) had it the worst as he had never seen a horse in his life prior to cowboy camp. As a result of the camp the actors looked natural on horseback and do most of their own stunts.
