One of the many African Wild Dog pictures i have!!These guys are amazing to watch socially, the way the whole pack works and as individuals!
They have several names - the latin name is Lycaon pictus otherwise - It is variously called the African wild dog, African hunting dog, Cape hunting dog, painted dog, painted wolf, painted hunting dog, spotted dog, or ornate wolf.
They are a canid found only in Africa, especially in savannas and lightly wooded areas.

I see, really? How silly, as with all wild animals, they are dangerous of course, but still.. how odd!
And exactly, each coat is like a fingerprint!

That term, wild dog, makes the people over in Africa view the dogs as being vicious and aggressive (like actual feral, wild, dogs). When really they are no where near that. Very curious, love to investigate, but not aggressive. It was a term coined in Africa when people were really fearing this species.Β
I chatted with the top researcher of APDs about this and that was the reasoning he gave us. Since that scientific name of theirs translate into 'Painted Wolf' it makes more logical since to call them African Painted Dogs, especially because there is no proof to back up why we would call them 'wild dogs' (in the way they are using it. Not wild, like free in the wild, wild as in feral).Β
As long as you respect them, they are not dangerous.Β
