For *Koai 's contest, "What If The Inmates Had One Day Of Freedom?"

The day was slow to drag on as Tumai sat in front of the prison. The inmates were being allowed one day of freedom to do whatever they wanted. The others had already left with all the cheetahs. Tumai though, she had nowhere to go.

Jira walked over to her after awhile,"You've only got today Inmate Tumai, why waste it?"

"Well ya see I dont have anyone out here for me Miss. My whole lifes on the inside now... so I'mma just wait here for the day."Tumai explained.

"No one at all? What about your parents?"Jira asked, sitting near her.

Tumai shook her head sadly,"I got none Miss. You see, they passed when I was only small. I remember my mama though, she used to tell me bedtime stories. After that, my grandparents raised me, but..."Tumai stopped, looking at her paws,"B-But I aint seen them since I ran off. I dont even know if they're still alive. B-Besides, all the cheetahs are gone so I cant leave anyway..."

Jira was silent for a minute before looking at her,"I can watch you if you'd like to see them."

Tumai looked at Jira, shocked,"Really Miss? But aintcha got to stay here? I mean..."she fumbled over her words.

"Its just an offer Tumai. Dont take it if you dont want."Jira said, turning to walk back inside.

Tumai hesitated before shouting,"Wait Miss! I-I guess it couldnt hurt..."she said quietly.

Jira glanced at her,"Lets go then, you've gotta be back here by sunset."

Hours later, the two arrived at cave within a small territory. Tumai's heart was beating so hard she thought it would explode as she swollowed her nervousness.

"A-A-A-As-sla...? R-Rose...?"she called, though it sounded more like a squeak.

After a few moments, an aged lion limbered out, his main tattered in a few places. He stopped when he saw Tumai,"My god...."he gasped.

Tumai mustered a thin smile,"H-Hi grandpa...."she said, trying hard not to shake.

Asla narrowed his eyes,"Just what the hell do you think your doing showing up here?!"he snarled.

Tumai squeaked and cowered,"I-I j-just wanted to see you and grandma... w-where is she...?"

Asla looked at her coldly,"Rosemary is dead. She died of grief not long after you got sent to the shithole."she growled.

"But...but...but...!!"Tumai squealed, feeling her eyes dampen.

"Get out of here Tumai, you're already dead to me and can rot in that place for all I care!"he spat before skulking back into the cave.

Tumai burst into tears, slumping down for a minute before walking back to Jira,"I-I-I'd like t-to go back t-to prison now Miss...."she said, tears dripping down her cheeks.

The two made the trip back in silence.

When the prison came in sight, Jira glanced at Tumai,"I'm sorry..."she murmured before walking inside.

Tumai said nothing as she returned to the darkness, the only place she felt safe anymore.
