A baby lays in the other room, everyone can hear her crying
Her mom's upstairs, head in her hands, feeling like she's dying
Her life's a mess, fallen apart, she's going out of her mind
She wants to just get up and walk out, leave everything behind
     Why can't she just believe?

A man stands on a deserted highway, looking at the stars
His car lays dead beside him, cold as steel prison bars
He's so wrapped up in his pain and grief, he doesn't realize
That heaven's staring back at him with ever-watching eyes
     Why can't he just believe?

A group of soldiers lay in a trench, praying for their lives
Yet they conveniently forget to pray at many other times
They keep their senses on alert, fearing another attack
Knowing that, alive or dead, they'll someday make it back
     Why can't they just believe?

We go about our daily lives, not a thought of God on our minds
The world tells us to play dead, then wraps us up in vines
We're just looking for a way to slip through life, God seems so out of range
Why can't we resolve not to exit this life the same as we were, unchanged?
     Why can't we just believe?
