Entry for ~Maylar’s “Symbolica Contest” I’m competing for the Gryphon book as a prize.

I'm very happy to say that i won the Gryphon book! Also won a custom piece of jewelry!

So... you may be wondering what the hell I’m trying to get at with my little snail up a tree.

I shall elaborate...

The snail is a symbol for many things in many cultures but the most important thing that it symbolises to me is Perseverance. This particular snail is climbing an enormous oak, carrying its home on its back to claim the last leaf. Why didn’t it take the simple way and go for the much easier to digest decomposing foliage at the bottom of the tree you may ask? Well that would be too straightforward.
Also the oak symbolises a variety of things including Bravery and Independence.

How does this connect to me personally? Well, I identify with the snail because I’m slow to accomplish personal goals. I usually take the long road because I have a tendency to overcomplicate things but in the end I always learn something more than I would have with the shortcut and I’m left with genuine feeling of accomplishment. There are other reasons as well for the symbolism in this piece but I’m not one to open myself up too much on such a public forum.

I adore snails for their fascinating physiology and gorgeous simplicity. This is also why I adore silhouettes and chose to represent my entry in this style. (simplicity anyway) Nothing gets lost in distracting backgrounds, foregrounds or shading and the message remains clearly defined.
