Neptune was still despondent over outgrowing his old necklace that he had found in the river. It had been his good luck charm, the one thing he could really call his. It still sat on his bed shelf back at the Nook, but he wasn't able to close the clasp around his neck without endangering his own breathing.
The grey wyngling glumly walked into the marketplace, curious as he took notice of some sparkly objects being sold by a particular merchant. One definitely caught his attention- a silvery-white, star-shaped crystal earring. In the background, he didn't notice that the merchant was struggling with the slight disrepair of her shop. Wood needed to be repainted, a sign had to be repaired and boarded up, and the place needed a general cleaning. The merchant took notice in Neptune's fascination and enthrallment in the object, then walked over to where the wyngling was and leaned down with a chuckle. An idea came to mind.
"Like what you see? Say kid, I'll give the earring to you for free and help you clasp it on if you can help me with some busywork in my shop," she said, making gestures towards the area that needed repairs. It was then when Neptune finally took notice of how the shop really needed fixing up. He fervently nodded his head, immediately agreeing to the deal. He was getting older and bigger- Neptune figured he could handle the work.
Several hours later, the wyngling- dirtied by paint and a little bit of dust- stood back to admire his work, having managed most of the repairs that the merchant had wanted. She was delighted with the hard work Neptune had put in, grateful that she didn't have to juggle those tasks along with her other work. To seal the deal, she assisted Neptune in clasping on the earring. The pain caused the grey wyngling to retract a bit, but it soon went away after a few moments. After saying his thanks and waving goodbye, Neptune lightly jogged back to the Nook, his eyes gleaming with a mix of pride and excitement at the new charm dangling from his ear. (360)
