Thanks, dear A-N. Ya know, I was just thinking that I never asked you what your 'handle' means. Do tell...

Thank you
What, the Anglo-Saxon? It means something along the lines of 'fate is completely inexorable'- which isn't a deep-held belief of mine, but I still like it

Did you do this with those new supplies from Dick Blick?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

SuburbanAngst In reply to DiamondCutter423 [2010-03-12 06:54:40 +0000 UTC]

I used the charcoal dust from DB a little bit to quickly gesture in the shawl. I used vine charcoal for the face, with accents from white pencil and charcoal pencil. I think I could have pushed the values a little more in the face.

No, I was just play acting with it ala Little Edie-style (Grey Gardens): [link]

You have a great face btw.

Beautiful work! I love the way you've rendered the light on the face. And the way the rough background contrasts with the smoothness of the face is really gorgeous - brilliant, actually.

Thank you for the thoughtful comment. You always say the nicest things. If I had my druthers, I would darken the shadows in the face just a bit to make the contrast stronger.

You're so very welcome! I think part of what I like about your work is the contrast (I've seen too many artists afraid to add contrast, resulting in blandness, and I'm definitely one of those artists at times). You're fearless with your work. I really admire that.

You are such a sweetie. If you have the time and interest, I invite you to participate in my 'Write a letter, Get a letter' project that I mention in my journal. It would be fun to get to know the gal behind the Loretta Young avatar.

I do like how the left eye came out. The light was hitting it and made it glow. I can see now that the other one needs the iris to be a tad bigger.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

SuburbanAngst In reply to S3V4STR4 [2010-03-08 06:03:41 +0000 UTC]

For this piece, yes, charcoal sticks and charcoal pencil. I don't usually mix graphite and charcoal, but some people do. Definitely try charcoal, if you haven't already. Your blacks will never be as dark with graphite as they can be with charcoal.
