Thanks, dear A-N. Ya know, I was just thinking that I never asked you what your 'handle' means. Do tell...

Did you do this with those new supplies from Dick Blick?

I used the charcoal dust from DB a little bit to quickly gesture in the shawl. I used vine charcoal for the face, with accents from white pencil and charcoal pencil. I think I could have pushed the values a little more in the face.

Ahhhh...now I remember....I needed a reminder that I inquired on this once before.
You have a great face btw.

Beautiful work! I love the way you've rendered the light on the face. And the way the rough background contrasts with the smoothness of the face is really gorgeous - brilliant, actually.

You're so very welcome! I think part of what I like about your work is the contrast (I've seen too many artists afraid to add contrast, resulting in blandness, and I'm definitely one of those artists at times). You're fearless with your work. I really admire that.

Absolutely - my handwriting is atrocious but I do love writing and receiving letters. Note me about it!

Thanks you! I peeked at your page, and I really like your Cary Grant. Done in pastels?

:hugs: thanks, missbones. I had pure fun taking the pics and that part is easier than drawing the pics, ha! I like to work from photos I've taken. You've tried this?

I studied this for a long time which means it's pretty good. I love the play of light over the work.

Thank you, dp. You do a lot of graphite, I see. Ever do charcoal?

I've never tried it. Do you think I should give it a try sometime? Is that what you use?

For this piece, yes, charcoal sticks and charcoal pencil. I don't usually mix graphite and charcoal, but some people do. Definitely try charcoal, if you haven't already. Your blacks will never be as dark with graphite as they can be with charcoal.

That's pretty good... I love the loose background, it makes the face to stand out well.
