Frederick, the eldest son of George II, was a dapper prankster also known as "The People's Prince," because he was wildly popular with commoners. He would take his dog out on walks unaccompanied, and chat and joke with anyone he happened to run into. He was friends with Alexander Pope, Farinelli, Flora MacDonald and the founders of the "naughty Hellfire club" (to quote Blackadder), and patronized all kinds of artists, poets and writers. For a Hanoverian, he was pretty cool.Related content
